Um…you guys? I think my blog brings bad luck to all of the restaurants that I love! Maybe it’s cursed? Maybe I’m cursed?! Is it because I’ve been drinking too much of that evil Monster Energy Drink?*
Or am I finally getting payback for my infamous review of Newstead Tower Pub House?**
Let me explain. The review that I’m about to write is about a restaurant that recently closed. That’s right – it’s gone. RIP, Wildsmoke.
I came here not too long ago with my friend and fellow BBQ-lover, Marjorie!
Spoiler alert: We loved this place. So imagine my surprise when I received this text*** from Marjy a few days ago:
You know why it took me so long to respond to her text? Because I fainted. Or maybe I got distracted by a squirrel or something. Anyway, I was pretty disappointed! This is not the first time I’ve visited a restaurant, only to have it close shortly after my visit. It’s happened before with Root, and again with Boodles BBQ.*** And of course, with Newstead Pub. ah, good ol’ Newstead.****
So here I am, yet again, blogging about a restaurant that is no longer here.
Let’s get on with it, shall we?
Wildsmoke is was a restaurant in Creve Coeur. Not my usual hang out spot, but my first apartment was in Creve Coeur, so it sort of holds a special place in my heart. That, and I’ll go pretty much anywhere for food.
We arrived and took a look at the menu. There were a lot of things to choose from, but this jumped out at both of us.
Do you see what I see? PIG CANDY?! Sold!
It was every bit as marvelous as it looked. Sweet, flavorful bacon that was somehow chewy and crispy at the same time. How did they do that?
Sticking with the bacon theme, we went with the shrimp and jalapeno firecrackers next. Huge jalapenos and shrimp stuffed with herbed goat cheese and wrapped with bacon? It’s like they created the menu just for us!
Marjy was eyeing the doorknob onion rings. I didn’t try these because I’m not a huge fan of onion rings, but these received high marks from Marjy.
I’ll admit, they did look pretty good! They were served with BBQ mayo.
We thought we were going to call it quits at three starters (because we still planned on ordering entrees!), but then we saw this:
A BBQ Sundae? With layers of pulled pork, baked beans, mac and cheese, slaw, bbq sauce and more pig candy?!?!
God. Bless. America. This right here? This is perfection. It was tasty. Messy, but tasty.
Finally we were ready to order entrees. Were we full? Maybe. Okay…yes. But we powered through like the awesome foodies we are.
Wildsmoke had a burnt end sandwich on their menu, and I didn’t even have to look at anything else because I knew that’s what I was going to order. With fries, please!
For those that don’t know, burnt ends are the pieces of meat cut from the point half of a smoked brisket.
This sandwich was pretty good. Mindblowing? No. I wasn’t expecting it to be so…fatty? I’m a sucker for unhealthy food, but I draw the line at biting into huge hunks of fat. Wikipedia told me that good burnt ends are supposed to have most of the fat and collagen rendered off, but I don’t think that happened here.
The fries, though? Those were good!
Anyway, Wildsmoke was pretty awesome. I loved the variety of items on their menu, especially their starter menu. I think I would have been happy just eating a bunch of their starters, to be honest!
The service was great and the prices were reasonable, too! Wildsmoke, you will be missed, although upon further investigation, it looks like the business owners are reincarnating Wildsmoke as Edgewild Bar and Grill. I’ll be interested to see how that turns out!
See you next week!
*If you really believe that Monster energy drink was created by the devil (and there are actually people out there who believe this!), I will openly make fun of you for being an idiot.
**I’ve challenged myself to see how many times I can sneakily mention this event in my blog posts. I think I’m up to at least ten mentions now. I’m a weird food blogger.
***Okay, so I was happy about that restaurant closing, because it kind of sucked.
****I did it again! HAH!
