I should really start thinking about beginning my blog posts with something other than my typical “Happy Friday!”. But until then, I’m going to say it: Happy Friday!
My latest foodie adventure happened at this little place:
Sauce on the Side! It’s walking distance from my place, and I had heard nothing but good things about their calzones, so of course I had to visit!
The inside was super sleek and modern.
And check out the presentation of their menu!
Sauce on the side has lots of tasty calzones to choose from. Each calzone is prepared with oil (Garlic Honey, Smoked Chili, or Garlic) and a sauce is served on the side. The sauce choices? Red sauce, meat sauce, spicy red sauce, BBQ sauce, queso, garlic butter sauce, or salsa verde. Whew! So much to choose from!
Thankfully, Sauce on the Side does the pairing for you; the calzones are each matched with oil and sauce, although you can substitute if you’d like. I was happy to let the restaurant do the work for me.
As I was checking out the menu, I was torn! Everything sounded so good. I didn’t know whether I wanted the Fatty B (pepperoni, meatballs, onions, provolone, roasted garlic, mozzarella and ricotta), the Which Came First? (roasted pulled chicken, applewood smoked bacon, jalapenos, egg, onion, and mozzarella), or the Pancho Villa (chorizo, jalapenos, yellow peppers, smoked cheddar, and mozzarella). Decisions, decisions!
After staring at the menu for what seemed like forever, I settled with the Pancho Villa. The cashier handed me a number, and I headed to a table to wait for my calzone to come out.
Okay…so I may have left something out. I also ordered a beer.
With a beer list like this, how couldn’t I? I went with the Urban Chestnut STLIPA. Keepin it local, baby!
My calzone came out pretty quickly, and…well…I’ll just let the picture speak for itself.
I have a really clean computer monitor, and you know why? Because I’m constantly licking my computer screen. You know why my friends think I’m weird? Because I’m constantly licking my computer screen.
I’ll let you decide if I’m kidding or not.
Back to the food! Let’s take a closer look:
YOU GUYS. I can’t even.
After I snapped about a million pictures of my food, I finally dug in. I wish I could accurately describe the wonderful burst of flavors that exploded in my mouth: the spicy chorizo, the delicious smoked cheddar, the flavor (and pop of color!) from the yellow peppers…everything was perfect.
And the queso dip. The queso dip! It complemented the calzone perfectly. It added just a touch of flavor without overpowering any of the components of the calzone. You really can’t go wrong with queso dip.
Ahhh…queso dip. I wish I could float in a huge vat of it. And there would be an inner tube made of calzone dough that I would float on, and I’d munch on calzones all day, and dip them into the lovely pool of queso that I was floating in.
Aaaaand this is why I should stop writing blog posts at 2am.
Anyway, it was good. Really good. The calzone itself was huge and definitely enough for two servings, but I powered through and ate the entire thing. I feel like I should get some sort of award for that.
All in all, Sauce on the Side is incredible. Everything, from the relaxed environment, to the décor, to the service, and of course, the food – was fantastic.
Go here now. I promise it’s worth it.
