So I went to Land of Smile with some friends tonight.
I borrowed that from their website, since it was too dark for me to take a proper picture of the exterior. Bad Stephanie.
But you don’t come here for pictures of buildings, do you? (do you?) You come for the food! And I can deliver.
Let’s hop to it.
Land of Smile is a cute little Thai place in Olivette, MO. With a clean interior and inviting atmosphere, I was really excited to eat here.
I scoured the menu online before I arrived, so I was ready to order almost as soon as I sat down.
I went with the Pork Kee-Mao Noodles: Fresh rice noodles with pork, egg, carrots, onions, bell peppers, green beans, bamboo shoots, tomato, and basil.
That’s a lot going on in one plate! It certainly LOOKED tasty.
But was it?
Honestly, I wasn’t a huge fan. The flavors were definitely there (and it was spicy, which I LOVED!). The veggies were fresh and crisp. The pork was juicy and flavorful.
But the noodles.
Those noodles were just weird. I suppose I’ve never had rice noodles. It was soft and almost…gummy? It was a texture thing for me; these were just too soft and not at all what I was expecting. This dish would have been fantastic had it not been for those weird noodles. I’d order this again, but with rice instead.
Aside from the weird noodles, this dish was good. And everything else about Land of Smile was great! Like I said earlier, it was clean and inviting. The food was reasonably priced (I spent less than 10 bucks on my entrée!) Our waitress was super friendly and didn’t hover over us (which I imagine would be hard NOT to do as we were the only 3 people in the restaurant!)
Let’s not waste any more time. Let’s get on with the scores!
Food: 3 stars (out of five)
Ambiance: 4 stars
Service: 4 stars
Value: 4 stars
I’ll come back, because I’m itching to try other items on the menu. Just nothing with rice noodles. Those squishy things are going to haunt my dreams for sure!
Psst…I’ll be hosting a special giveaway next week for Facebook fans of Off The Eaten Path. Get ready!
