Howdy, y’all! Hope this Friday is treating you well. Me? Well, I’m enjoying my last Friday as a 26 year old; my 27th birthday is next Thursday, February 2nd! Eeep! I’m so close to 30, guys…it’s scaring me just a bit.
Anyway, on to the food!
I went to Iron Barley a few weeks ago for a yummy lunch with a friend.
I’ve been wanting to check out Iron Barley for quite a while. They were featured on the Food Network show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives in 2008, and Man vs. Food in 2009! This is quite the famous St. Louis spot.
My friend ordered the peppered pork sandwich:
Delicious pulled pork smothered in barbecue sauce on a toasted bun. Does it get any better than this? I don’t think so! The barbecue sauce had a subtle apple flavor that I adored. It was served with a side of potato salad (delicious!) and a side of cole slaw (not so delicious…way too vinegar-y for me!).
As for me? Well, let me give you a hint:
Oh yeah, babe.
The Monte Cristo Double Dog consisted of two all-beef Chicago dogs, split and grilled, served on a toasted hot dog bun, which was slathered in sweet strawberry jam. As if that wasn’t awesome enough, they covered it with ooey gooey swiss cheese.
This was amazing! I absolutely loved the sweet and savory combination. I was a little afraid that it wouldn’t work, but it did. It absolutely did. I need to recreate this at home, STAT!
So the food was great, but what about the service? Honestly, I wasn’t a fan. We came on a quiet afternoon, so it wasn’t terribly busy. But I felt rushed by our waiter, and he wasn’t the friendliest guy on the planet. You work at a famous restaurant – the least you can do is crack a smile, right? Oh well.
Bad service aside, I definitely recommend Iron Barley. I’m already planning my trip back. I gotta have more of that Monte Cristo dog!
See you next Friday – it will be my first blog post as a 27 year old! Eeeeeeeeeep.
