Fat & Nasty Night at Denny’s!

by Stephanie on November 25, 2011

Happy Day After Thanksgiving! I hope everyone’s holiday was amazing. As for me? Well…either I ate way too much, or I’m in my first trimester. Food baby, anyone? Winking smile

Anyway, instead of a normal blog post, I figured I’d step outside the box today.

Yes, friends. Today is the day I tell you about a little trip that I took to Denny’s.

And I brought a few friends with me.

But let me start from the beginning! As you may or may not know, I’m a little obsessed with bread pudding. It’s my all-time favorite dessert. If it’s on the dessert menu, I have to order it. Yes, even if I’m ridiculously full. I’m a little fanatical about it, I know.

Anyway, my friend Sarah informed me that Denny’s had bread pudding french toast on their holiday menu.

Did you read that? Let me say it again for you: Bread Pudding French Toast. Wowza! I had to try this. I had to visit Denny’s. Nevermind the fact that I haven’t been to Denny’s in years. Nevermind the fact that I’m a self-proclaimed food snob (actually, I’m really not—I did blog about my trip to KFC, after all!) And nevermind the fact that Denny’s is terribly bad for you. Trans fats, anyone? Smile

But I couldn’t let this holiday season come and go without trying the bread pudding french toast. And I knew I would be able to round up at least a few other friends to take the plunge with me. And thus, Fat & Nasty Night at Denny’s was born.

Although I knew exactly what I was going to order, I couldn’t help but take a peek at the other items on the menu. I could hardly believe some of the items that were offered on the menu!

There were Red Velvet Pancake Puppies,

A Milk & Cookies Shake,

And a Holiday Turkey Melt! This sucker was like Thanksgiving on a sandwich; it was basically a turkey sandwich with stuffing on it. A sandwich. With stuffing on it. My mind is still reeling from the idea of it!

I placed my order for bread pudding french toast, turkey bacon, and pumpkin pancakes. But first up? The milk and cookies shake. I couldn’t resist.

A shake made with sugar cookies? Yes, please. Calories? Who cares about calories! I slurped this down, and yes, it was totally delicious.

My friend Joselyn ordered the Red Velvet Pancake Puppies for the table to share.

They were dusted with powdered sugar and served with a cream cheese icing.

Action shots were taken:

They were actually really good! They tasted like a red velvet cake and a funnel cake had a baby. So good.

Another highlight? Joselyn’s grilled cheese sandwich. But this wasn’t just any grilled cheese – it was a grilled cheese with mozzarella cheese sticks stuffed in it!

Have I mentioned that Joselyn is my hero? Because she totally is. This was surprisingly delicious. Anyone care to guess how many calories are in this monstrosity? I don’t even want to think about it.

Finally, my food came out. The pumpkin pancakes and turkey bacon:

And the star of the show – bread pudding french toast!

So much food! I nibbled on everything. My expectations were low – I mean, it was Denny’s, afterall – but I was pleasantly surprised. The food wasn’t as terrible as I expected! My pancakes weren’t the best I’ve ever had – they were a little tough – but they were decent! And my turkey bacon was tasty as well.

The bread pudding french toast, however? Well…I guess you could say I was a little disappointed. I’m not sure what I was expecting with this. I suppose I was hoping for something a little softer and gooey-er? This was a little hard, and it really just tasted like plain old french toast. Not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but there was no discernable bread pudding flavor. Oh well…you can’t win ‘em all, right?

Service was awesome. Our waiter handled our party of 8 like a champ! And prices were super duper cheap. My whole meal was less than $10!

So there you have it. Fat & Nasty night at Denny’s was a success. I can’t say I’ll ever be back, but it was a lot of fun!

See you next week with a normal post Smile

Time for Brunch!

by Stephanie on October 7, 2011

in American, Breakfast, Dinner, Lunch

It’s obvious that I love to eat. Why else would I have a food blog? But what you probably don’t know is that my favorite meal is brunch. I love having the choice between sweeter breakfast food or savory lunch food – or a little bit of both!

Needless to say, I was very excited to try the brunch menu at Scape.IMG_95922

It’s a cute bistro located in the Central West End. The interior was beautiful!

IMG_95902

Very spacious and open.

I was drooling over just about everything on the menu, but I decided to go with the Wimbledon French Toast.

IMG_95952

Cornflake crusted brioche with strawberries and cream? Count me in!

IMG_96172

I thought the presentation was just amazing. I liked the way the french toast was stacked! The strawberries and cream were quite amazing, as well. I didn’t even need syrup!

I also ordered a side of chicken sausage:

IMG_95982

They looked terrible, but they tasted like heaven. Very flavorful, with just a hint of spice! I like spicy things. Smile

I went with a pretty big group, and service was surprisingly good despite our group’s size.

Scape also serves lunch and dinner; I absolutely can’t wait to visit again! Chances are I’ll be headed back for brunch in the near future. Smile

Check back next week for another fun post!

Pearl Café Spicy Challenge, Part Two!

by Stephanie on September 30, 2011

in Asian, Dinner, Lunch, Thai

Hello, and happy Friday! I’m ready ready ready for the weekend!

So…remember when I did the Pearl Café Spicy Challenge the first time? I attempted level 25, and there was a lot of sweat (and maybe a few tears), but I conquered it!

251783_10150641544540624_330457015623_19437470_6341051_n

Well, I know that I said I would never try to attempt level 50, but…I love a good challenge.

And apparently, so do these guys:

IMG_95872

Yep, I organized another Unofficial Yelp event at Pearl Café! I knew I wasn’t the only crazy spice-head out there! Smile

Just like before, a waiver had to be signed, and the rules were reiterated: 45 minute time limit, no sharing, and only water or beer could be consumed.

For level 50, I decided to try a different dish: The Coconut Noodles.

IMG_95802_1

This dish consisted of rice noodles with eggs, tofu, bean sprouts, green onions, cilantro, and coconut.

The dish itself, just like every other dish I’ve had at Pearl Café, was amazing. The flavors just couldn’t be beat.

However, level 50 was hard. Ridiculously hard. My mouth was on fire after just one bite! And look at all of the food on my plate! I wasn’t sure if my stomach could handle the spice and the volume of food.

After about 30 minutes of struggling with this dish, I threw in the towel.

Booo! As far as the others in the group? We had a few successes, but a few other failures. I spent the rest of the evening trying desperately to cool my mouth down, which is why this is the last picture of this post. It was hot!

However, I’m not a quitter. Or maybe I’m just crazy. Either way, I will be back!

Pearl Café Spicy Challenge, you have not seen the last of me! I will be back to attempt level 50 again!

See ya next week with a non-spicy post Winking smile

Oh, you fancy, huh?

by Stephanie on September 23, 2011

in American, Dinner

About a month or so ago, I was invited to taste the new menu at Truffles in Ladue.

IMG_94812

Does anyone else think of something extremely fancy when they think of Truffles? I mean, there’s gotta be a reason why truffles are so darn expensive, right? Right?

Anyway, Truffles is a nice restaurant tucked into the heart of Ladue, a suburb of St. Louis. Honestly, I don’t venture through Ladue very often, so I didn’t even realize the restaurant existed for a while! What kind of food blogger am I, anyway?!? Smile

Needless to say, I was very excited to check out this new (to me) restaurant. Aimee (the awesome Community Manager of Yelp) came too; hurray for girl’s night!

We walked in, and the friendly waiter immediately presented us with water and menus. I was craving a sweet cocktail, so I asked the waiter what he recommended. I wanted something light, fruity, and made with rum.

I was presented with this:

IMG_94882

Oh. My. Gosh. This was amazing! I’m not exactly sure of every ingredient that was in the drink, but it definitely had rum and peach puree in it. Deliciously refreshing.

On to the food! Truffles has a nice variety of food; there was certainly something for every palate.

IMG_94892IMG_94902IMG_94932

I noticed that roasted bone marrow was on the starters menu, and I knew I had to try it. I’ve never had bone marrow, and I love trying new things!

IMG_94962

Look at that awesome presentation! The bone marrow was roasted with pistachios and capers, and was served alongside crostini and an herb salad.

The bone marrow itself? Amazing! I spread it on the crostini, and it was rich and creamy, just like butter. I loved it!

Aimee started with an artisan cheese plate:

IMG_95002

I had a few nibbles, and it was very good.

For my entrée, I went with the potato gnocchi. It was served with sungold tomatoes, garlic, and bottarga (salted fish roe).

IMG_95142

Wow. This was easily the best gnocchi I’ve ever had! I loved the chewy texture of the gnocchi, and the flavors of the tomatoes and garlic really came through. Delicious.

Aimee had the beef shortrib:

IMG_95102_1

I’m pretty sure the picture speaks for itself, but I’ll say it anyway: this was good. Really rich and just plain fantastic.

Service at Truffles went above and beyond; our waiter was always there to answer questions, refill our water, etc.

The food was fantastic, and I can’t wait to come back and sample more of the menu! Two huge thumbs up for Truffles.

See you next Friday!

This Yelper Eats–Lola!

by Stephanie on August 12, 2011

in American, Bread Pudding, Dessert, Dinner, Lunch

Good morning and happy Friday!

A few weeks ago, Yelp St. Louis ran a Yelp Eats promotion. Many local restaurants offered many of their appetizers, entrees, and desserts at 50% off. Who loves a deal? This girl.

So when some friends wanted to check out Lola during Yelp Eats week, I was all over it.

Lola is a chic restaurant located in downtown St. Louis. It is spacious and loft-like, with super high ceilings, brick, and exposed ductwork. I loved it.

IMG_91882

There was also a pretty cool jazz band (unpictured) playing that night. The volume of the music was a bit loud, but they sounded great!

I started off with a drink. Lola’s drink menu is extensive, with lots of yummy sounding libations. I settled on the Bogen; this drink contained coconut rum, pineapple juice, and iced tea!

IMG_91802

It was so delicious and refreshing! Just what I needed on a hot summer evening.

I was really hungry, so I ordered an appetizer to start. Polenta Fries sounded interesting, so I went with those! These delicious “fries” came with garlic aioli dipping sauce, and spicy ketchup.

IMG_91702

I wasn’t a fan of the garlic aioli, but the spicy ketchup rocked my socks! The polenta fries were hot, crispy, and delicious.

For my entrée, I ordered the Spanikopita Stuffed Portabella. This was a spinach and feta stuffed portabella wrapped in phyllo and served with a mixed field greens salad.

IMG_91842

Oh my goodness. I’m pretty sure I’m going to have dreams about this baby! It was amazing. The phyllo was perfectly flaky and yielded easily to the spinach and feta filling. The portabella mushroom was juicy and flavorful. The entire dish was absolutely perfect. I wish I could have it again right this minute! Yum.

I was super full at this point, but I looked over the dessert menu and noticed blueberry bread pudding. You all know I’m a bread pudding fanatic, right? It goes without saying that I ordered this dish.

IMG_91942

Unfortunately, I was really disappointed by this dish. It was really dry, despite the drizzle of blueberry sauce and whipped cream. I took one bite and couldn’t stomach it anymore. I was really sad – I totally wanted to love this dessert!

Service at Lola was attentive and friendly. And aside from the aforementioned loud music, I have no other complaints about Lola. What a great place and fun experience! I’m sure I’ll be back soon.

See you next week!
