Dewey’s Pizza School!

by Stephanie on October 5, 2012

in American, Dinner, Lunch, Pizza

So it’s a pretty well-known fact that I love pizza.

And when it comes to pizza, Dewey’s has some of my favorite. If you’ve been reading the blog for a while, you’ll remember that I blogged about Dewey’s before!

So when I was recently invited to Dewey’s to make my own pizza at their appropriately named “Pizza School,” I was more than excited to participate.

And I invited my sister along!

She had never been to Dewey’s before; what better way to get her acquainted with their awesome pizza?

While we waited for our class to start, we sat at the bar and sipped on some beer. Dewey’s has a lot of beers on tap (and they switch them out quite frequently!). I settled with a Rogue Dead Guy Ale.

IMG_27272

Interesting name, right? It was pretty tasty.

Soon after we finished our beers, it was time for our class to start. We went back into the kitchen, where one of the cooks explained Dewey’s pizza making process.

IMG_27282

Dewey’s uses a very high temperature pizza oven; it’s over 500 degrees! Because of this, their baking process is super quick – it only takes about 7 to 8 minutes to cook a pizza. This quick process ensures that the crust is chewy and delicious; not dried out and tough. Yum.

I took a look at some of the pizzas made by the class before us.

IMG_27302

Yum!

It was time for us to get started. First step? Tossing the dough! We received very detailed instructions on how to do so. It was fun to watch!

IMG_27352IMG_27392

IMG_27402IMG_27422

He made it look so easy.

Our turn! I snapped away as my sister went to work.

IMG_27452IMG_27472

After our dough was sufficiently tossed (it’s a lot harder than it looks!), it was time to top our pizzas with whatever we desired. There were lots of toppings to choose from!

IMG_27692

I spy bacon!

IMG_27662

Dewey’s had a few “cheat sheets” for us to use as a reference if we desired:

IMG_27342

But I wanted to wing it!

I started with a light amount of sauce:

IMG_27562

And added a ton of mozzarella cheese.

IMG_27572

Then I added green peppers, black olives, and bacon. Lots and lots of bacon!

IMG_27652

My sister went pretty heavy on the bacon, as well. Yep – we’re definitely related! Winking smile

IMG_27602

Our pizzas were popped into the oven, and we had a seat in the dining room and waited. Before we knew it, our pizzas were ready!

IMG_27762

Oh boy!

IMG_27782

This tasted just as good as it looked. The dough was perfectly chewy, and all of the toppings worked together perfectly. I couldn’t get enough of this pizza. I’m so glad I had tons to take home as leftovers! My sister was a big fan as well. Smile

Thanks to Dewey’s for letting me and my sister stop by for pizza school! We had a blast.

See you next week with another fun review!

Good morning, bread pudding lovers! Well, I certainly hope you’re a bread pudding lover by now. It’s Week 5! We’re almost halfway through the BP Challenge. The weeks are just zooming by, let me tell you. I’m loving every minute, and I think Jess is too!

Anyway, this week brought me to Cyrano’s, in Webster Groves. This cute little spot serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, but they’re most well known for their desserts.

I’ve actually had the bread pudding at Cyrano’s a few years ago, but this was way before I started this little blog, so there’s no photo evidence. And in my world, if there are no pictures, it didn’t happen. So that, along with the fact that a few readers strongly recommended Cyrano’s, meant that I had to return!

Let’s talk about BP, shall we? Cyrano’s offers Caramel Brioche Bread Pudding, which is topped with a cherry bourbon sauce.

IMG_10172

Let’s take a closer look, shall we?

IMG_10152

My first impression? While Cyrano’s tried to spice up the presentation a bit (the whipped cream helps!), this certainly isn’t the prettiest bread pudding on the block. What’s that saying about ‘eating with your eyes first’? I’d say that applies.

However, I’m not one to be deterred by looks. I dove right in. The bread pudding was served warm, although the bourbon sauce had sort of a ‘I’ve been sitting under the heat lamp for too long’ sort of thing going on. It was starting to form a weird film on top.

Taste-wise, this bread pudding was average. It’s funny how my expectations of bread pudding have gone up. After trying the delicious BP at Remy’s and Bridge, this bread pudding sort of paled in comparison. It was good, don’t get me wrong. But was it the Best I’ve Ever Had? Hardly. Like I said, the bourbon glaze had started to solidify. And while the outside of this bread pudding was perfect, texture-wise, the inside was approaching that custard-like sogginess that I loathe. I call that built in portion control – I simply stuck to eating the outer edges.

Again, this wasn’t bad. It was decent. But if I had to pick my Top 3 bread puddings in St. Louis, this unfortunately wouldn’t make my list.

Time to update the standings! Remember, 1 is my favorite (so far). There’s so much bread pudding left to consume. This list could change!

1. Remy’s

2. Bridge Tap House

3. Harvest

4. Cyrano’s

5. Café Eau

Note that while Cyrano’s isn’t my favorite, it’s still not as bad as the stuff at dreaded Café Eau. Blech!

See you next week. Winking smile

Good morning and welcome to 2012! How did you ring in the new year? I was surrounded by friends and lots and lots of food. Oh, and maybe a drink or two. Winking smile

Anyway, let’s hop to it – I’ve got a lot of ground to cover for this special Wednesday blog post! Keep reading until the end for a fun announcement! Smile

I visited The Block a few weeks ago with the lovely Jess from Show Me The Sugar.

IMG_05472

The Block is Webster Groves’ newest eatery. This neighborhood establishment doubles as a butcher; they have a full-service meat counter in house! They also feature a menu that’s locally inspired. Lots of local ingredients = happy Stephanie.

The menu features lots of soups, salads, sandwiches, and entrees. But first, I checked out the drink menu.

IMG_05202

Care to guess which drink caught my eye? I have a thing for bacon, folks. It may or may not border on obsession. Winking smile

The Bacon & Eggnog cocktail featured Buffalo Trace bourbon, Myer’s Rum, nutmeg, and house-made bacon infused eggnog. How could I pass this up?

IMG_05292

It was garnished with a small slice of candied bacon. Delish! The drink was creamy and rich, without being too overpowering. The taste of bacon was extremely subtle, but it worked! I loved this.

On to the food! I went with the Grilled Cheese & Smoked Ham sandwich.

IMG_05232

This sammy contained grain mustard, house-made bacon jam, and was served with a side of fries and pickled vegetables.

IMG_05332

Oh my. This was perfection. The sandwich was perfectly toasted, and the cheese was deliciously melty. I loved the hot and juicy ham in this sandwich, and the bacon jam? The bacon jam was a little salty, a little bacon-y, and super amazing. I adored this sandwich. The fries were decent, but could have been a little hotter. The pickled veggies? Meh. I’ve had better!

Even though I was stuffed after my sandwich and fries, I had to have dessert. Want to know why?

IMG_05412

Look at that! Just look at it. Would you be able to say no to that? Banana Walnut Bread Pudding. It was served with a delicious, not-too-sweet caramel sauce, and was topped with creamy vanilla ice cream. The bread pudding itself was perfect, texture-wise. It was like a super moist hunk of banana nut bread. Mmm.

The Block was fabulous, and I highly recommend it. The food was great, service was fantastic, and prices were reasonable. Oh, and the bread pudding? Amazing.

Speaking of bread pudding, you’re probably wondering what my big announcement is, right? Well, the reason why I met up with Jess from Show Me the Sugar was because over the next 10 weeks, we’ll be eating (and reviewing) bread pudding from all over St. Louis! I’ll be announcing which places we’re planning on visiting on Facebook and Twitter, so be sure to follow me to stay in the loop.

After we try 10 (or so) different bread puddings, me and Jess will narrow it down to the Top 3. This is where you come in – you’ll help us choose the best bread pudding in St. Louis. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it, right? We’ll interview the winner and they’ll be featured on both of our blogs. Eating lots of dessert and giving some much-deserved spotlight to a local business? Sounds like a winner to me! Smile

What does this mean for Off the Eaten Path? Don’t worry – I understand that not everyone shares my crazy love for bread pudding, and this will not turn into a bread pudding blog! I’ll still have my regular restaurant reviews every Friday. The bread pudding reviews will be on Wednesdays. Two blog posts a week? Things are going to be busy around here in 2012!

The Bread Pudding Challenge will start on January 11th, and will continue every Wednesday for 10 (or so) weeks. I hope you’re just as excited as we are! Where is your favorite bread pudding in St. Louis? Let me know, and it may make it onto our list of places to visit!

See you in a few days with another local restaurant review. Smile

What’s up, friends? I’ve been a little busy lately, but I’m right back at it with a brand-spanking new review and a new website design! What do you think?

I recently went to Highway 61 Roadhouse and Kitchen with my mom and sister. Located in Webster Groves, MO, Highway 61 is a cute little restaurant with a lot of character.

IMG_2860

IMG_2869

Look at all of the cool stuff on the walls! I’m a sucker for that sort of thing. :)

HIghway 61 offers a happy hour on Monday nights from 4-6:30pm. You can buy one appetizer and get one free! Want to guess what we ordered? ;)

My sister and I chose two appetizers each to share. Four appetizers didn’t sound like a lot, and of course we had to take advantage of the special!

Let’s get started. I know you all are here for the pictures, after all!

We started with the Louisiana BBQ Shrimp:

IMG_2889The menu described it as ‘plump shrimp sauteed and baked in Worcestershire herb butter and served with French bread’. Mmm! It certainly looked tasty.

And it was! The flavors definitely popped. The herb butter was rich and very well seasoned. The plump shrimp soaked up all of the yummy flavors, and with each bite I think I could feel my tastebuds doing a little happy dance. Nice start! Let’s keep going.

Next were the Roadhouse Fries:

IMG_2888These babies were topped with pulled pork, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese sauce, and scallions.

Now as you all know, I’m a huge sucker for smothered fries. But how did these compare to those at The Shaved Duck? Well…I’m sad to say these fell short. The sauce was delicious, cheesy, and rich. The pulled pork was tender and juicy. But the fries were terrible! They were hard and seemed almost stale. You can’t have good smothered fries if the fries are bad! C’mon! What a disappointment.

Hoping for better luck with the next appetizer, we went with the cajun nachos:

IMG_2878The menu made these sound so tempting: ‘spicy tortilla chips topped with cheddar cheese sauce, pepper jack cheese, andouille sausage crumbles, red beans, sour cream, and green onions’.

Long story short: these also fell flat. The chips were most definitely stale. To make matters worse, the toppings weren’t good! Where’s my andouille sausage? All I could taste were the black beans. Fail. Huge fail.

I was feeling a little defeated at this point, but we still had more food to consume! It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it! ;)

Next were the ‘Gator Toes’. Don’t worry – it was actually just chicken! (I do love alligator, though! Mmm!) These were hand breaded chicken strips served with a choice of BBQ, Voodoo, Crossroads, Louisiana Lucifer, or honey bourbon glaze. We chose the BBQ, Voodoo, and honey bourbon glaze dipping sauces.

IMG_2883These were pretty good! The chicken was moist and tender, and it was pretty heavily breaded, which satisfied the carb-a-holic inside of me. The dipping sauces were all pretty tasty, although I think the honey bourbon glaze won my heart.

My mom decided not to partake in all of the gluttony that my sister and I participated in, and instead opted for a sad, lonely chicken breast topped with cheese:

IMG_2897

She didn’t like it; she said that it was too dry. I decided to take her word for it and not torture myself with another taste of a failed dish. :)

As a side, she ordered the sweet potato pie. Okay, I’m lying – I convinced her to order the sweet potato pie as her side dish, and she agreed. Thanks, mom!

IMG_2898Sweet potato pie is one of my favorite desserts (second only to bread pudding, of course!) Let’s play a game, shall we? Fill in the blank — “This sweet potato pie was ________”

A. Dry

B. Not very good

C. Pathetic

D. All of the Above

If you answered D, you win! Your prize is this sweet potato pie (minus one bite) and the rest of my mom’s sad chicken breast.

Seriously, though – this was not good. Moving right along…

I think we were all feeling pretty defeated at this point, and it was clearly time to call it quits. But I saw bread pudding on the menu! And I have one rule when it comes to desserts: if bread pudding is on the menu, I must try it.

So I did. Highway 61 offers their desserts in regular portion sizes and smaller ‘tasting’ sizes. My hopes weren’t too high, so I opted for the ‘tasting’ size.

IMG_2902

It was a little…burnt. But with bread pudding, even when it’s bad it’s still pretty darn good. My sister and I gobbled down every last crispy bite.

Despite the abysmal food, everything else about Highway 61 Roadhouse was pretty good. The atmosphere was rustic and charming. Our server was friendly and helpful. The prices were decent (especially factoring in the generous happy hour specials!). Let’s get to scores, shall we?

Food: 1 star (out of five)

Ambiance: 3 stars

Service: 4 stars

Value: 4 stars

If I didn’t make it obvious enough through my review, I’ll say it now: I really have no desire to return to Highway 61 Roadhouse. Sorry! While this wasn’t the worst restaurant experience I’ve ever had, it certainly wasn’t the best.

So what do you think? Did I give this place a fair shake? Was I too harsh? Share your story about your worst restaurant experience in the comment section!

Failure of epic proportions!

June 4, 2010

Okay, so if you’re from St. Louis, chances are you’re going to be offended by this post. And for that, I’m sorry (maybe!). But I have to be real with you — some things in St. Louis are just a little bit (okay, a LOT) overrated. Ted Drewes, anyone? Don’t get me wrong; some of [...]

Milagro Modern Mexican

May 27, 2010

So ever since Milagro Modern Mexican (in Webster Groves, MO) opened a few weeks ago, I’ve been DYING to go. After all, it’s not too far from where I live! I could WALK there, for crying out loud! I was finally able to drag my boyfriend there tonight. Well, he came along pretty willingly. No [...]

CJ Mugg’s!

April 28, 2010

So my boyfriend was feeling hungry on a rainy Saturday afternoon, and I had passed by CJ Mugg’s a few times while in the area, so I thought it would be worth a visit (and blog post, of course!). CJ Muggs has a few locations around the St. Louis area, so I suppose it would [...]

Cyrano’s Cafe

March 28, 2010

I went to a cute little place called Cyrano’s today. It’s a cafe and wine bar, but it’s most well-known for their extravagant desserts. Think gigantic ice cream sundaes, pies, and bread pudding. One thing you’ll get to know about me as you read more and more of my blog is that I absolutely adore [...]
