1904 Steakhouse

by Stephanie on June 1, 2012

in American, Dinner, Steakhouse

So I’m torn. And a little (okay, a lot) frustrated.

I want to share this review with you all, but a big part of me doesn’t want to.

Can I tell you a secret? I’m a huge perfectionist. When I go to restaurants, I easily take hundreds of pictures. In many cases, I’ll take dozens of pictures of the same dish from different angles. I’m not a professional photographer, but I try my best, and I’m always working to get the best photo.

Sometimes the photography gods are looking down on me and I get the perfect shot.

Like I said, I’m not a professional, but I try really hard to get good shots of food. After all, we eat with our eyes first, right? And what’s a good food blog without good pictures?

But sometimes I have bad luck.

Really bad luck.

99% of the time, it has to do with lighting. A lot of restaurants nowadays have really dim lighting, which makes it hard to get a good shot. And I refuse to use my flash when it comes to food photography. It washes out the food and makes it look awful. Don’t do it.

Dim lighting is challenging to work with, but I’ve managed to do it with pretty good results.

However, 1904 Steakhouse? Not only do they have dim lighting, they have dim red lighting.

My work was definitely cut out for me. And while I’m not proud of the results, I do feel that the steakhouse was blogworthy. So I’m going for it.

Don’t judge me. Smile

Anyway, I visited 1904 Steakhouse a few weeks ago with my mom and sister for our monthly girls dinner. I was excited to finally try this restaurant; it replaced Jeff Ruby’s after it closed, so I was interested to see how it would compare.

The interior was amazing.

After we were seated, our waiter brought out some of the tastiest bread I’ve had in quite some time.

IMG_16562

It was served with regular butter, as well as an herbed garlic butter.

IMG_16612

Delicious!

For my entrée, I went with one of the specials for the evening: three small filets, topped with béarnaise sauce. One filet was topped with lobster, one with a scallop, and one with shrimp.

IMG_16632

All three rested on a bed of asparagus.

I ordered my steak cooked medium rare, and while it wasn’t cooked properly (can anyone cook a steak to order nowadays? Anyone?!), the flavors were decent. I would have preferred a lighter hand on the béarnaise sauce; it was so rich I could barely finish half my dish! But the bites that I did have were very good.

My sister ordered the steak and lobster:

And my mom insisted that I take a picture of her lonely steak:

Happy, mom? Smile

We ordered a few sides to go with our meal. Up first? Lobster Macaroni & Cheese:

IMG_16792

This was creamy and delicious, but super rich. I could only have a few bites!

Next up? Roasted brussels sprouts.

IMG_16752

They were crispy and cooked with bacon. I enjoyed these, but my sister and mom weren’t huge fans.

Finally, it was time for dessert. Sticky toffee pudding was on the menu, and it came highly recommended by our waiter, so we tried it.

IMG_17002

It was topped with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. I really liked it! It doesn’t compare to my beloved bread pudding, but it certainly held its own. Smile

Service was fantastic. When my mom’s steak came back ridiculously overcooked (she ordered medium and it was definitely well done), the head chef came out to our table with a new steak and apologized in person. It was a nice touch (and the reason why our dessert was on the house!).

Would I come back to 1904 Steakhouse? I’m not sure. My food was decent, but it was not mindblowing. The fact that my steak was overcooked was a bit of a turnoff as well.

And maybe, just maybe, I still can’t get over how awful the lighting was here. Even after running these through photoshop and attempting to white balance them, they were still really red. Bah.

See you next week with a great review (and better pictures, I promise!) Winking smile

So my last post about KFC was sort of lame, right? I know, I know…but I’m making up for previous transgressions by presenting you with my experience at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse. Oh, it was EPIC.

My mom treated my sister and I to a dinner at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse the night before mother’s day (what’s wrong with this picture? Shouldn’t it have been the other way around? Oops!). I was super super pumped, especially after looking at their online menu. I studied it and knew what I was going to order weeks in advance! :)

Anyway, Jeff Ruby’s. It’s in the River City Casino in South County, St. Louis.

First of all, the place was absolutely beautiful. The ambiance was amazing: the lighting was dim and romantic, and there were chandeliers everywhere! My heart was racing in anticipation.

I’m not going to waste any more time. Let’s get on to the food! Are you ready for lots of pictures?

We flipped through the wine menu first and settled on a dessert wine: Moscato. Dessert wine with dinner? Sounds like a great way to start the night if you ask me! I’m not a wine connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination, so I’m not going to pretend to be. All I know is that I like sweet bubbly wines, and this one hit the spot!

guess who drank most of the bottle? *hiccup*

On to the food. We’ll start with appetizers. My mom wanted us to try a little bit of everything, so we ordered quite a few appetizers. We started with the HUGE tiger shrimp cocktail:

This picture doesn’t adequately show just how HUGE these shrimp were. They were gigantic! And the flavor was amazing. Definitely a nice start to the meal.

Oh, but we didn’t stop there. Next on the appetizer list? Pan roasted mussels. They were accompanied with a white wine, applewood smoked bacon,  taragon and lemon sauce. MMM. These were divine. The mussels had a nice, light taste. Not too bogged down with spices. Clean…just the way I like it.

I ate a few mussels before I took this picture! Oops!

Next I wanted to try an oyster on the half shell. I’ve never tried raw oysters before. What the heck…might as well try it now!

I topped it with some cocktail sauce and horseradish before I slurped it down. Not bad! I don’t know if I’d do this again, though. Not a huge fan of the texture of oysters, even though the flavor was crisp, clean, and amazing.

We also had bread. I believe it was Jewish Rye. Not too shabby. The butter was the star of the show for me! There was regular butter (BORING!), and then there was mushroom and truffle butter. Now THAT’S what I’m talking about! It was yummy. I could eat that butter with a spoon. YUM.

look at that butter! Delish. Plain butter on the right, HEAVENLY mushroom and truffle butter on the left.

We noticed that they had sushi on the menu, and as a self-proclaimed sushi snob, I knew we had to try it. We went with the Dragon roll. I don’t remember exactly what was on it, but there was eel involved. And cucumber. And I think there was some crab in there somewhere. It was not bad at all! Quite delicious, actually. It gets the sushi stamp of approval from me!

Can you believe we still had room for our entrée after all of those appetizers? Well, we did. I went with the steak and lobster. 11 ounces of cold water lobster tail paired with 9 ounces of dry aged filet mignon? YES PLEASE! I had my steak topped with crab meat and béarnaise sauce, just because I was feeling a little fancy. :)

you can't have lobster without butter sauce!

The food was AMAZING. The pictures just don’t do it justice. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare, and it was amazingly tender. It melted in my mouth. The crab and bearnaise sauce were decadent and rich. The lobster was tender and so so SO juicy! I promise you that I will have dreams about this meal. It was cooked to perfection.

Of course I can’t hog the spotlight; my mom and sister’s entrees were fabulous as well:

Mom ordered the U.S.D.A. Prime Dry Aged New York Strip...14 ounces of meaty perfection!

my sister also ordered the steak and lobster. She topped her steak with peppercorn shrimp scampi.

Everything at Jeff Ruby’s is a la carte, so of course we had to order some sides to go with our meal.

We had baked macaroni and cheese:

baked macaroni and cheese

Potatoes Anna:

potatoes anna

Creamed Spinach:

creamed spinach

And grilled bacon (because who DOESN’T love bacon?!?!) :

grilled bacon!

Whew! So how was everything? The baked macaroni and cheese was tasty, although I admit that it looked better than it tasted. The Potatoes Anna were delicious! Think fried potatoes, minus all of the grease that weighs you down. They were delicious, and seasoned with the perfect amount of salt and spices.

The creamed spinach was, well…creamed spinach. Didn’t knock my socks off, but it was decent.

My favorite side by far was the BACON!! Who would have thought, right? It was delicious applewood smoked bacon, and it was thick, thick, THICK! Oh, it was perfection. Chewy, flavorful, salty, spicy…it had it all.

So after stuffing my face with appetizers, entrees, and sides, how in the world did I find room for dessert? Well, my friends…Stephanie ALWAYS makes room for dessert.

I went with the flourless chocolate torte. It was topped with sliced almonds and accompanied with house-made cherry sorbet.

Twas muy delicioso! It was rich and decadent (I’ve been using that phrase a lot throughout this review, haven’t I?) The raspberry sauce that was smeared on the plate was sweet and tart at the same time. The cherry sorbet was SO good, and went perfectly with this cake. It was just delightful. Perfect way to end the meal!

Or did I really end the meal there? Can I tell you a secret? I also had a piece of gooey butter cake and some amaretto ice cream to go with it. I’m so sad I didn’t take a picture, because this was the BEST gooey butter cake I’ve had IN. MY. LIFE. It was freaking fantastic!

So thus ends the journey of a thousand plates. Needless to say, we had plenty of leftovers. I’m munching on a piece of bacon right now. Nomnomnom. So good.

Service was very good. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. No complaints there!

Ready for some scores?

Food: 5 stars (out of five)

Ambiance: 5 stars

Service: 5 stars

Value: 4 stars

Jeff Ruby’s almost received a perfect score from me. However, one could have easily purchased an iPhone for what our meal cost us. However, good food is worth the money, so I’m giving it 4 stars for value anyway!

I can only hope to be so lucky to return to Jeff Ruby’s again someday. THANKS TO MY MOM FOR TREATING ME TO AN AMAZING MEAL!!

I will have sweet dreams tonight. And then I’ll be hitting the gym HARD tomorrow. Oy vey.

1904 Beerhouse? FAIL. Huuuuge fail.

by Stephanie on April 3, 2010

in American, Dinner, German, Lunch, Pubs

I go out to eat a lot. A LOT. Way too often, probably. But believe it or not, I don’t really experience many food failures. Usually I can come up with some sort of redeeming quality for a place. I try really hard. I’m a huge optimist — what can I say?

However, my visit to 1904 Beerhouse (located inside the River City Casino in South County, St. Louis) can only be described in one way: An epic FAIL. Oh, it was so bad. So, so bad.

Now this part right here is where you imagine the front of the establishment. Silly me deleted the photo off of my camera. Drats.

The decor was really nice. That part was really well thought out. There were really cool sculptures, photos, and other knickknacks all over the restaurant. And it had really cool chandeliers hanging from the ceilings.

Our waitress was very friendly as well. She answered most of our questions concerning the menu with no problem, and she was very pleasant.

Now onto the food. Oh, the food.

Since they were out of the Kobe Beef Corn Dog appetizer, we started out with the Crispy Dungeness Crab Fritters. It was like a beer battered crab cake. It was pretty tasty, and the chipotle tartar sauce that came with it was pretty tasty.

crab fritters with tartar sauce

The side of cole slaw, however, was DISGUSTING. It was vinegar based, which I usually like, but something tasted way off about it. It was really sour.

For the main entree, I settled with the Big and Cheesy Chicken Sandwich. The menu described it as ‘crispy thigh chicken, sweet and spicy onions, extra sharp cheddar cheese, St. Louis style BBQ sauce on an onion roll’. Pretty tasty, right? Well, it sounded appetizing to me.

doesn't look very appetizing, though...

Well, it came out, and it was TERRIBLE. First of all, there were way too many slimy onions on the sandwich. I removed those immediately. What was left was a rectangular block of fried chicken on a bun. Hmm. ‘Where’s my cheese?’, I wondered. I bit into the sandwich, and quickly figured out that the cheese was STUFFED into the chicken. It was the most disgusting thing I’ve bitten into in quite some time. The cheese just oozed out. And there was way too much of it. Oh, and is ‘St. Louis style BBQ sauce’ really ketchup? Because that’s what it tasted like. Ugh.

fried hunk of chicken, minus the gooey onions

I could only suffer through two bites of the sandwich before I decided I had had enough. The fries were laughable. They looked like McDonald’s fries, and tasted like they had been sitting out for a while. Not hot, not crispy, just blah.

My mom ordered the pizza, and it was not bad. It tasted like the kind you can get frozen from the grocery store, but whatever. She seemed to like it okay. And it definitely looked appetizing to me!

yummy pizza!

My sister ordered the basket of fried chicken, which might have been palatable had it not come with three pieces of thigh meat. Maybe something like that should have been mentioned in the menu. Personally, I like a variety of pieces.

The chicken came with a potato cake of sorts, as well as watermelon salsa. Fried chicken with watermelon? Oh…I see what you did there…*raised eyebrow* The watermelon salsa was pretty bad, by the way. Imagine sweet watermelon bits with crunchy onions, all drenched in a sour vinegar sauce.

watermelon salsa

My sister ended up sending the chicken back,  and instead went with the ribs (not pictured — sorry!), which were decent but forgettable.

Overall scores?

Food: 1 star (out of five)

Ambiance: 5 stars

Service: 4 stars

Value: 4 stars

Okay, I did think of ONE good thing about the Beerhouse: this bad experience has made me really appreciate when restaurants get it RIGHT. Never again. Sorry!

P’sghetti’s Pasta and Sandwiches

by Stephanie on March 22, 2010

in American, Dinner, Italian, Lunch

Okay, okay. Don’t laugh. Nevermind. You can laugh. At the name. P’sghetti’s? I know I did. I laughed hard. I compared it to Fazoli’s. But then I reminded myself that P’sghetti’s is NOT a chain, and it couldn’t possibly be as bad as Fazoli’s. And I walked in.

The place was, well…it was surprisingly nice. And clean. And welcoming! I pushed all of my previous judgments of the place aside and stared at the menu. I finally decided to go with the Mostaccioli Dinner, which, for the surprisingly low price of $7.60, came with a huge bowl of mostaccioli, 1/2 loaf of garlic bread (!!!), and a tossed salad. Wow. Yes, please!

The mostaccioli itself was pretty good. Like I mentioned before, the bowl was HUGE, and would easily be enough for two people to share. It was covered in a sweet red sauce and lots of meat sauce. Yum.

The garlic bread was unbelievable! The bread they used was similar in taste to a sweet hawaiian bread. Oh, it was like manna from heaven. Just delicious! It was so delicious and soft. I could have eaten a full loaf !

yummy garlic bread

The salad (not pictured) was your basic run of the mill salad. Not special enough to deserve its own picture, that’s for sure!

So, P’sghetti’s…I’m sorry about making fun of your name. I’ll probably still chuckle a bit whenever I hear it, but you’ve earned my respect. Delicious, delicious food. And FANTASTIC bread. I’ll be back.
