Crushed Red

Good morning! I hope you’re having a lovely morning (or afternoon, or evening!). I’m still recovering from my recent trip to California. It was such a good time! I miss the beach already.

Anyway, let’s talk about a St. Louis spot, shall we?

About once a month, I go to lunch with my mom and sister. We take turns picking out the restaurant, and there’s only one rule: it has to be a place that none of us has visited before.

This time, it was my sister’s turn to choose the spot, and she chose Crushed Red in Clayton.

Good choice, little sis! Winking smile

I had been wanting to try this place as soon as I heard about its opening in February of 2012. It’s received quite a bit of buzz; its owner, Chris LaRocca, also owns EdgeWild Restaurant & Winery in Chesterfield.

The restaurant itself is quite lovely. I really liked the warm atmosphere. It was very loft-like with the open ceilings and exposed brick. I loved it!

Oh, and I’d like to steal this light fixture and put it in my dining room. Thanks. Winking smile

IMG_15212

So neat!

Crushed Red has a number of pre-made salads, pizzas, and soups, but you can also create your own pizza if you so desire. Tough decisions to make!

IMG_14922

We all made our decisions, and then it was time to sit back and watch the action.

IMG_14942

I love open kitchen/preparation areas.

None of us went with salad (healthy food?! Psssshhhhh…), but if you decide to create your own, there are lots of fun toppings to choose from.

IMG_15002

After a few minutes, our pizzas were ready!

I went with the Yukon Gold Rush pizza: parmesan cream, hickory bacon, sliced yukon gold potatoes, olives, rosemary, gorgonzola and mozzarella cheese.

IMG_15092

IMG_15142

Oh baby. This was good! I was worried that the small size of the pizza wouldn’t be enough to fill me up (I have a huge appetite!), but this was the perfect size.

Crushed Red has a self-serve toppings bar that I found quite interesting. Before I dug into my pizza, I paid it a visit.

IMG_15152

There was roasted garlic,

IMG_15162

crushed red pepper,

IMG_15172

parmesan cheese,

IMG_15192

and pepperoncini!

IMG_15182

There was also tabasco sauce, olive oils, and cholula hot sauce. Lots of options! Not wanting to mess with the flavor of my pizza too much, I settled with a tiny sprinkle of parmesan cheese.

So…the important question…how was the pizza? It was good! I really enjoyed it. The crust was chewy and flavorful. The toppings worked. I love yukon gold potatoes, and whoever made the decision to include them on a pizza is a genius.

My one gripe with the pizza? The toppings weren’t evenly dispersed. At all. One side of my pizza was crowded with potatoes and rosemary, and the other side was mostly cheese. It was very strange, to be honest. Not enough to take away from my enjoyment of the pizza, but it was quite noticeable.

Service at Crushed Red was very friendly, but I found myself quite annoyed with the lack of knowledge that the workers (and later, the manager?) had about their offerings. When I was initially deciding what to order, I was drawn to the Cowpoke Smoke salad: smoked beef brisket, roma tomato, red onion, blue cheese, crispy jalapeno straws, and goddess dressing. My one question: What is goddess dressing? No one – No one – could answer that question for me. In my case, it was just a matter of curiousity, but what if someone with a food allergy made that same inquiry? To not even be able to name any of the basic components in the dressing was a little alarming. I was so turned off by this that I skipped the salad altogether and just went with pizza.

Again, this didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the restaurant (or my pizza), but it is worth noting.

Aside from those minor complaints, I really enjoyed Crushed Red. I would definitely come back to try other selections on the menu. Heck, maybe I’ll give the goddess dressing a try next time and figure out what’s in it myself! Winking smile

See you next week.

PW Pizza!

by Stephanie on February 24, 2012

in American, Dinner, Lunch, Pizza

Good morning and happy Friday! I hope your week is going well. Food. Let’s talk about it. Smile

I went to PW Pizza a while ago with a friend. This new-ish pizza joint is owned by the same people behind the lovely Vin de Set (review coming soon, I promise!). As delicious as Vin de Set is, I knew that PW Pizza would be just as tasty.

We started with some Spinach & Artichoke Dip:

IMG_05492

It was served with warm and chewy pita bread.

Oh my. You guys…this was the best spinach dip I’ve ever tasted. I’m not even kidding! It was served piping hot; it was literally bubbling! I’m drooling right now. Sorry…

Anyway, paired with the yummy pita bread, this was an amazing start to the meal.

Next up? Pizza, of course! PW has a number of specialty pizzas, but I felt like creating my own, so I did!

I picked my crust (honey whole wheat), sauce (BBQ sauce for me!), cheese (mozzarella, please!), and toppings. On one half of the pizza I ordered pulled pork; on the other half I went with bacon and green pepper. Oh yeah, babe!

IMG_05552

Amazing. The crust was soft and a little sweet. And the BBQ sauce was the perfect complement to both sides of my pizza. Thanks to the filling Spinach and Artichoke dip, I could only manage to down one slice, but that just meant one thing: lots of leftovers! Aren’t pizza leftovers the greatest?

Service at PW was fantastic. Our waitress was bubbly and super friendly. Prices were reasonable as well.

I can’t recommend PW Pizza enough. Let me know if you decide to visit! You can always tweet me the details. Winking smile

See ya next week!

As I promised earlier on Twitter, I’m writing about none other than Pi! Also known as 3.14159265…oh, you get it.

I remember when I was in the 7th grade, we had a huge project in my Algebra class. It was a math scavenger hunt of sorts. There were 50 questions, and some of them involved things like figuring out the height of our flag pole in front of the school, measuring the circumference of the rotunda in our building, and finding the first 100 digits of Pi.

Nowadays, with the power of Google, a project like this would take less than an hour. But back in 1997? It took weeks! I ended up going to the library and looking up a book (using the dewey decimal system – now who remembers that?) where I found it there. Ah, those were the good old days…

Oh! Where was I? Right – Pi!

IMG_76552

A friend and I visited a few weeks ago, during my vegan challenge. I heard that Pi had some fantastic vegan pizza, and I had to give it a try! There are a few locations in St. Louis – University City, The Central West End, and Kirkwood. We visited the Kirkwood location.

IMG_76582

Oh, and it’s President Obama’s favorite pizza joint! That’s gotta count for something, right?

Anyway, we arrived around 8pm on a Saturday night. Ideal pizza eating time, if you ask me.

The place was packed, but we only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. Not bad!

We were quickly seated, and I ordered one of these:

IMG_76302

A Bell’s Hopslam. Now I don’t know much about beer, but I do know what I like, and I loved this! It was smooth, kind of fruity, and really hoppy! I used to hate hoppy beers; now I kind of love them.

Since we were doing the vegan thing, we went with their thin crust (vegan) instead of deep dish (not vegan). We topped it with vegan Daiya mozzarella, green peppers, portabella mushrooms, and Match italian “sausage”! Match is a delicious meat substitute that looks (and tastes!) like the real thing.

IMG_76532

Yum. It certainly looked tasty!

Taste-wise, it was just okay. I’m not a fan of thin crust pizza (I prefer a chewier, thicker dough), so the crust didn’t impress me; it was very crispy and cracker-like. The toppings were fresh, and I thoroughly enjoyed Pi’s thick, sweet tomato sauce.

But the cheese? It tasted vegan, and not in a good way. The texture was just way off. It’s hard to describe; it was tacky and gummy, like glue. I don’t blame Pi for this at all – I blame the cheese. Nothing beats the real deal, unfortunately!

While the weird cheese didn’t deter me from digging in, it was enough to turn my friend off; he just couldn’t get past the texture, and I don’t blame him.

Luckily, Pi had something that we both loved: Vegan cookies!

IMG_76382

These babies were totally delicious and totally vegan. Yummy chocolate chip cookies with a creamy filling? Yes, please! Remember these?

oatmeal-creme-pies-300x300

They tasted just like Little Debbie Oatmeal Crème Pies! But with chocolate chips. I wish we would have ordered another set of these – they were that good!

Time for scores!

Food: 3 stars (out of five)

Ambiance: 5 stars

Service: 5 stars

Value: 3 stars

Pi was a little on the expensive side, but the ingredients were fresh and tasty, so I can forgive that. I definitely want to give Pi another try now that the vegan challenge is over!

Pizza Pizza!

by Stephanie on January 9, 2011

in American, Dinner, Lunch, Pizza

If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you’ve probably figured out that I love pizza. I seem to eat it a lot, don’t I? Let’s recap.

I’ve had really good pizza at Dewey’s,

Not-so-good pizza at Imo’s and Katie’s Pizzeria,

And even out of town pizza at Giordano’s!

Well, recently, I visited another pizza joint.

IMG_67352

Serra’s Pizzeria. It’s a cute little family owned and operated place in Maryland Heights, MO.

I visited on a Thursday night, and it was hopping! I didn’t take a picture of the huge crowd, because I didn’t want anyone to think I was a creeper Smile

You’re here for the food, anyway – right? Let’s get started!

We began with toasted ravioli with meat sauce – if you’re not familiar with toasted ravioli (I think it’s a St. Louis thing!), let me tell you a little about it.

Hmm…on second, thought, why don’t I just show you?

IMG_67302

Lightly breaded and fried nuggets of awesomeness! Seriously, these were good – they might actually be the best toasted ravs I’ve had. Perfectly seasoned outside, piping hot middle…glorious. The meat dipping sauce was nice as well. I gobbled these down in no time! I could have made a meal out of this alone, honestly.

But there was pizza to be eaten! And I never turn down pizza.

I went with the Serra’s Supreme: it was a thin crust pizza topped with sausage, pepperoni, bacon, onion, and mushrooms. I added green peppers to get a little more veggie action going.

IMG_67552

Oh my. This was good! I’m not a huge fan of thin crust pizza (You can blame Imo’s for that), but this was great! The crust was crispy without being cracker-like, and it didn’t fall apart or get soggy under the weight of the ingredients.

One great thing I’ve discovered about thin crust pizza? You can eat more of it! Well, you probably shouldn’t, but your tummy can fit more! Haha…I’m such a glutton. Smile

Service was friendly and efficient without being annoying or overbearing, which is nice.

My only complaint? The place smelled a little smoky (even though I didn’t see anyone smoking! Weird.) And it was…kinda dirty. Now I understand it was a busy night, but the carpets were absolutely atrocious. Looked like they hadn’t been vacuumed in days! Would it hurt to have clean carpets? It really grossed me out. The plus side? I got a good ab workout from keeping my feet off of the floor the entire time I was seated!

Score time!

Food: 4 stars (out of five)

Ambiance: 2 stars

Service: 3 stars

Value: 3 stars

Maryland Heights is a good 30 minute drive from where I live, so I’m not sure I’ll be back soon, but I wouldn’t turn down another trip. It was good!

Failure of epic proportions!

by Stephanie on June 4, 2010

in American, Dinner, Lunch, Pizza

Okay, so if you’re from St. Louis, chances are you’re going to be offended by this post. And for that, I’m sorry (maybe!). But I have to be real with you — some things in St. Louis are just a little bit (okay, a LOT) overrated. Ted Drewes, anyone? Don’t get me wrong; some of the overrated places aren’t BAD. They just aren’t as good as people make them out to be.

However, when it comes to this place, in my opinion it’s not only overrated, it’s just downright BAD.

Enough beating around the bush. I’ll just get around to it. The place I’m talking about is…

Yep…I said it! Imo’s Pizza.

Now, if you do a little bit of digging around the web, you’ll see that there are two groups of people: people who LOVE Imo’s, and people who know what good pizza is (zing!).

What’s the big deal, you might ask? Why are there such loyal devotees to pizza place? Why are there people who absolutely LOATHE it? One word. Provel.

Yep, you read that right. Provel. Not provolone. Provel. It’s a really popular cheese in St. Louis (and not used much elsewhere). It’s a processed mix of cheddar, swiss, and provolone. It has a low melting point. It’s not stringy. And it’s what Imo’s uses to top their pizza.

I’m not a big fan of provel (if you couldn’t tell by now!). I like my pizza to be stringy. I like this:

Look at that stringy goodness. Provel doesn’t give you that! It’s a clean bite. It’s like putting American cheese on your pizza. It’s processed GARBAGE.

Now that I’ve pissed off half of St. Louis, let’s talk about my experience here. Prior to this review, I hadn’t had Imo’s in YEARS. I just dislike it that much. Fortunately, my boyfriend enjoys provel. We went to Imo’s so I could blog about it!

We ordered a 14 inch supreme pizza. I thought it would be interesting to order half with provel and the other half with mozzarella. So we did! Let’s do some experimentin’!

the top half is provel. Bottom half is mozzarella.

I tried a slice with provel. Yuck. Just as I remembered it. Clean bite; no stringy gooey cheese. In fact, you couldn’t even taste the cheese. That’s the thing about provel. It doesn’t have a distinct taste; just a gummy texture that holds all of the toppings in place. It’s like eating paste.

I tried a slice with mozzarella. It was slightly better (and definitely stringy!), but not great.

And that’s the thing about Imo’s. Their pizza is just not good. Even though we ordered the supreme pizza (with every topping imaginable on it!), it was still bland. Their vegetables are obviously frozen before they throw it on the pizza (which results in a watery mess when the pizza is baked). The meats aren’t seasoned well (if at all!). It’s just bad.

Scores?

Food: 1 star (out of five)

Ambiance: 2 stars

Service: 3 stars

Value: 4 stars

Don’t believe the hype! It’s a run of the mill pizza joint that is WAY overrated, and you can find much better in St. Louis for a comparable price.

P.S. If you like my blog (and don’t hate me after this post bashing Imo’s!), please please PLEASE follow me on Twitter and subscribe to the blog! (How to subscribe? Scroll down, and you’ll see a spot to put in your email address on the right-hand side of the page! I promise you won’t get any spam!) That way you’ll be the first to know when I make new posts! Pretty please with sugar on top! :)

Dewey’s Pizza

April 25, 2010

So you all have probably figured out by now that I’m not the healthiest eater on the planet. I keep in pretty good shape, and I’m definitely not overweight, but my eating habits are pretty bad. I’ve known for quite some time that I need to change the way I eat.  It’s just hard when [...]

1904 Beerhouse? FAIL. Huuuuge fail.

April 3, 2010

I go out to eat a lot. A LOT. Way too often, probably. But believe it or not, I don’t really experience many food failures. Usually I can come up with some sort of redeeming quality for a place. I try really hard. I’m a huge optimist — what can I say? However, my visit [...]

So…for those of you who have noticed (hopefully ALL 3 of you!), this blog is called ‘Off the Eaten Path’. It was originally going to be a food blog about hole-in-the-wall type places in St. Louis. Well…I decided at the last minute that I don’t go to enough hole in the wall places to fill [...]

Not so yummy pizza…

February 28, 2010

I hate for my first entry in this blog to be a negative one, but anything’s better than staring at a blank page, right? So me and the boyfriend went to Katie’s Pizzeria Cafe in Clayton, MO (a suburb of St. Louis, for you lovely out-of-towners). I had passed by the place a dozen times, [...]
