Off the eaten path

C-C-C-Changes!

Good morning, friends!

So, if you read my blog post from last week, you’ll remember that I promised a pretty big announcement on Monday.

And as my sister so dutifully reminded me, I didn’t make that announcement on Monday. Whoops! Winking smile

I’ve been a little busy. And if you follow me on Twitter, you probably already know this. But I’m going to say it anyway.

That big announcement that I’ve been holding in for the past few weeks? I’m moving.

To Virginia.

I recently accepted a job with an amazing company in the Charlottesville, Virginia area. It was quite unexpected; I wasn’t actively looking for a new job – a recruiter contacted me – but the opportunity was so good for my career that I just couldn’t pass it up.

So I’m moving. Away from St. Louis. Away from the city I’ve lived in for my entire life. Away from the city that I’ve grown to absolutely adore.

Am I excited? Absolutely. The company I’ll be working for is fantastic, and the job I’ll be doing? It’s in my field (Chemistry), it’s a huge step up for my career, and I’ll be doing the things I absolutely love to do.

But you know what? Even though I’m over the moon about this, I’m also terrified. I’ll be living in a completely new city. Away from my family. Away from my friends. Away from everything I’ve ever known.

As I’ve announced my news to family and friends, one of the first questions I’ve been asked is “What are you going to do about your blog?”

It’s a very legitimate question. After all, the title of my blog is Off the Eaten Path St. Louis. However, even though my blog is pretty region-specific, it can easily be broadened to reflect whatever city I’m in.

I’ve thought about that option quite a bit – changing the blog to Off the Eaten Path Charlottesville. I could even change the blog to Off the Eaten Path, and write reviews of restaurants in any city I happen to be in.

I’ve bounced around a few other options that I’m keeping under wraps for now, as well. The point is, I’ve thought about the future of my blog. A lot.

And I’ve come to the conclusion that while I’m not going to shut this blog down, I’m going to go on hiatus. How long will this hiatus last? I don’t know for sure. It could be a few weeks. It could be a few months. It could be longer than that. My priorities right now are getting settled in my new city (I’m moving in two days!), getting adjusted to my new job, and starting my new life.

When I started blogging in March of 2010, I was not in a great place. I was unhappy with a lot of things in my life. I felt unfulfilled in my job. My social life was pretty nonexistent.

And as silly as this sounds, blogging changed everything. It gave me confidence in my skills as a writer. I joined Twitter, mostly to promote my blog, and I ended up connecting with a lot of amazing people. I started Yelping more, and met even more fantastic friends through that avenue. Thanks to my blog, I was able to have the opportunity to freelance for Patch. This improved my people skills like no other; immersing myself in the local community and talking with people from all walks of life improved my communication skills in ways that I never thought imaginable.

It wasn’t until after I started blogging that I had the courage to take on another passion: running. I joined a few running groups, and six half marathons (and one full marathon!) later, it’s safe to say that I’m in love with the sport and all of the great people I’ve met through it.

Blogging has showed me that there are other people out there who share my passion for food. It’s made me a stronger writer. It’s introduced me to new people, new cuisines, and new opportunities that would have never presented themselves otherwise.

However, most importantly, blogging has made me fall in love with St. Louis in ways that I never thought possible. I’ve seen so many great things in this city. I’ve met so many amazing people. I don’t think that would have been possible had I not started this blog.

And while I don’t want to lose any of that, I need to take a step back for now. Right now, my career is the most important thing in my life, and I don’t want anything to stand in the way of that. Writing quality blog posts takes a lot of time, and while I probably could churn out weekly blog posts (on restaurants in St. Louis and elsewhere; you wouldn’t believe the amount of reviews I have waiting to be queued up!) I don’t want the quality of this blog to suffer.

So there you have it. This isn’t “goodbye,”, it’s “see you later.” I promise to keep you updated on Twitter and Facebook, as always.

Thanks for being loyal readers of Off the Eaten Path. I’ll see you all soon.

Thai Country Cafe

by Stephanie on August 10, 2012

in Asian, Dinner, Lunch, Thai

It’s no secret that I adore Thai food. Especially when it’s spicy. Remember my adventures at Pearl Café? Just thinking about those trips makes my mouth burn!

Anyway, it had been way too long since I had Thai food. So when a friend suggested going to Thai Country Café, I happily agreed. Since when do I ever turn down food? Answer: NEVER.

IMG_25942

Thai Country Café is in University City, in the Delmar Loop. It’s sort of on the outskirts of the main strip, but it’s totally worth the visit.

It’s so cute inside!

IMG_25832IMG_25852

I browsed through the huge menu. So many choices!

IMG_25822

I settled with #16, the Khao Pad Nam Prik Paow. What a mouthful!

IMG_25922

This dish consisted of fried rice with thai chili paste, green onions, bell peppers, basil leaves, and bamboo shoots. I ordered it without bamboo shoots.

Wow. This was so good! You know that feeling when something is so good that you just keep eating it, even when you get painfully full? I had that feeling! I didn’t want to stop eating it.

My friend ordered #60, the Green Curry.

IMG_25862

This had bamboo shoots, green peas, bell peppers, and basil leaves, and was cooked with green curry paste and coconut milk.

I tried a bite and it was pretty tasty, but my dish was definitely better Winking smile

Service at Thai Country Café was speedy and super friendly. Prices weren’t too bad, either!

I would definitely come back to Thai County Café. The food here is so good, and I can’t wait to try more dishes!

See you next week!

It’s Wednesday, and you know what that means! It’s another week of the Ribs Challenge. My stretchy pants are on, I’m armed with wet naps, and I’m ready to talk about the next two contenders! I hope you’re ready to listen. Smile

First up? Richard’s Ribs!

IMG_26082

This little shack is in Kirkwood, and if you’re driving through the area, you’ll miss it if you’re not paying attention! Ask me how I know…Winking smile

Anyway, once I finally found the place, I was ready to order. I went with a half slab of ribs, of course.

IMG_26052IMG_26002

I had high hopes for this place for two reasons:

1. The smoker outside. Maybe it’s just a marketing thing, but whenever I see a smoker outside of a BBQ place, I assume that their ‘que is going to be GOOD.

2. The fact that it’s called Richard’s Ribs. I mean…if you’re going to name your restaurant after your specialty, it’s gotta be good, right?

I’m sure you know where I’m going with this, so I’ll just say it: I wasn’t a fan of these ribs. I didn’t like the barbecue sauce; it was pretty thin and didn’t have that smoky sweet flavor that I typically go for. Usually, I wouldn’t give a place poor marks because of the sauce, but since Richard’s cooks their ribs in the sauce and I don’t have the option of having them unsauced…well…it is what it is. Sorry!

Unfortunately, the ribs themselves weren’t that great, either. The meat was tough and chewy and didn’t fall off the bone like it did at Smoki O’s (and to some extent, even Bully Boy’s!). No bueno. Sorry, Richard’s!

Moving on to my next stop: Charlotte’s Ribs! This spot was allllll the way out in Ballwin, which is quite a drive for this city girl.

Spoiler alert: It was definitely worth the drive. Winking smile

Charlotte’s offered Baby Back Ribs as well as Pork Spare Ribs, and since I wasn’t sure of which ones to order, I did what any fat kid foodie would do: I ordered both! Winking smile

First up? Baby Back Ribs.

IMG_26172

I also ordered a few sides (which I’ll talk about on a later review!). For now, let’s talk about the ribs.

Oh man.

OH. MAN. These were good! The meat was super duper tender and fell right off the bone. The meat had a rich smoky flavor that I loved. There was no smoker outside of Charlotte’s, but I didn’t need to see one to know that these ribs had gotten the royal smoker treatment.

And the sauce? The sauce was fantastic! It was thick, smoky, sweet, and a little spicy. I made sure that every last bite was drenched in this stuff. So good.

Next up were the pork spare ribs.

IMG_26142

Another home run! Just like the baby back ribs, the meat just fell right off the bone. I’ll admit that I enjoyed the baby back ribs more than these; the bits of cartilage in the pork spare ribs made them a little hard and unpleasant to eat. But once I moved past that small complaint, these were fab.

Two thumbs up, Charlotte! I was hoping you wouldn’t let me down, and you certainly didn’t.

Now that I’ve visited four rib restaurants, this is where I would usually give you a rundown of the standings. But this time around? I’m not going to do that. You’ll have to wait until the very last week to see where everyone ranked (and who my favorite is)! A little mystery is fun, right? Winking smile

See you next week!

Southwest Diner!

by Stephanie on August 3, 2012

in American, Breakfast

Good morning, friends! Happy Friday! I’m so happy this week is over. Bring on the weekend!

Anyway, I recently visited a place I’ve been looking forward to trying for ages. For months, I drove by the location, only to see that it was still closed.

Well…it finally opened.

Southwest Diner! I love a good diner, and I heard amazing things about this place.

I went with a friend for breakfast. We were super hungry, so we started with some sopapillas:

IMG_25642

These fried pieces of dough were pretty tasty, especially when I dipped them in honey! Yum.

On to the real food! I went with Jonathan’s Famous Fiery Scramble: Spicy, cheesy scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries, and toast.

IMG_25652

IMG_25712

IMG_25762

I loved this! The eggs were perfectly cooked; they were fluffy and flavorful – they certainly had a deliciously spicy kick! The home fries were crispy on the outside with a pillowy soft potato center. And the bacon? Well…can you really ever go wrong with bacon?!

My friend went with the cornmeal pancakes:

IMG_25682

They look pretty plain, but the cornmeal definitely added something special to these babies. It gave them a nice texture that I really enjoyed.

Service at Southwest Diner was speedy and friendly. Prices were very reasonable. I absolutely give this place two thumbs up, and I can’t wait to go back! Heck, maybe I’ll visit for breakfast tomorrow. Winking smile

See you next week!

Good morning, friends! Happy August! Wow…I can’t believe it’s August already. Summer is almost over, and even though it’s been a scorcher, I’m a little sad about it.

You know what I’m not sad about? The Ribs Challenge! Ever since I made the announcement about the challenge last Friday, it’s all I could think about! I absolutely adore ribs. Well…I adore all food, but ribs make me especially happy.

It’s a good thing I’m such a rib lover; this challenge is going to be intense. Unlike my other two challenges, this one is going to span only five weeks. Two helpings of ribs a week? Yes, yes, yes!

Let’s hop right in. First up? Smoki O’s!

IMG_24552

This place, located on North Broadway in North City, St. Louis, is definitely off the (b)eaten path! I couldn’t wait to put their ribs to the test.

IMG_24582

These ribs were very well sauced. I needed lots of napkins for these babies! The sauce, while smoky and tangy, wasn’t really my favorite.

But the ribs themselves? Amazing! The meat had a delicious smoked flavor that I fell in love with. And the meat fell right off the bone! It was some of the most tender ribs I’ve had. Two thumbs up!

Alright…so now that Smoki O’s is out of the way, let’s move on to my next adventure: Bully Boys!

IMG_25602

This cozy shack was on the other side of the city, in the South St. Louis/Bevo Mill area.

I already knew what to order, which made life easy. Ribs, please!

IMG_25482

These were very different from Smoki O’s. As you can see, Bully Boys uses more of a dry rub; you’re responsible for saucing the ribs yourself!

As much as I wanted to love these ribs (after all, they look amazing!), I just wasn’t crazy about these. The flavor was decent, but they were tough and hard to eat; a far cry from the tender ribs at Smoki O’s. Sorry, Bully Boys…your ribs weren’t awful, but they didn’t knock my socks off, either.

Phew! Week 1 of the Ribs Challenge is in the bag! 4 more weeks and 8 more restaurants to go! Wish me luck…and if you have any suggestions on BBQ spots I should hit up for ribs, leave me a comment below (or on Facebook) and let me know! Winking smile

Pappy’s Smokehouse and an announcement!

July 27, 2012

Okay…so I’m a little embarrassed. The place I’m reviewing today has been talked about for at least a few years now. It’s been all over The Travel Channel and The Food Network. It has won numerous awards, and if you’re from St. Louis (and hey – maybe even if you’re not!) you’ve heard of this [...]

Chicken Wing Challenge: My top 3!

July 6, 2012

Hello there! Was anyone else’s week as weird as mine was? I think having Wednesday off for Independence Day totally screwed up my week. I’m glad it’s Friday, but it certainly doesn’t feel like one! As you know, I finished up Week 10 of the Chicken Wing Challenge. I can’t believe how quickly these ten [...]

Russell’s Café & Bakery

June 29, 2012

It’s finally Friday! And yes, it’s a hot one. Yesterday’s high temperature here in St. Louis was 108 degrees. Wow. I felt like I was baking like a little muffin! Mmm…muffins… Ahem. Back on topic. I recently visited Russell’s Café & Bakery in Fenton, a suburb of St. Louis. I go here often for lunch [...]
