One thing you should know about me – I love strange food combos. Bacon + Chocolate? Check! Apple Pie + Cheddar Cheese? You betcha! Barbecue sauce + anything? Oh yeah.
So it’s no surprise that when I heard about the popular practice of combining fried chicken and waffles in the south, I knew I had to try it for myself. Imagine my surprise when I was informed that Goody Goody Diner served chicken and waffles! To the top of my to-do list it went.
And since you can’t experience something like this on your own, I brought my sister and her friend to chow with me:
Hi Cortney and Cynt!
Goody Goody Diner is located in north St. Louis, and has been serving chicken and waffles (and lots of other goodies) since 1948!
The inside was super cute. They even had the original menu posted on the wall.
Gosh, I wish things were still this cheap…
I browsed through the menu, but I already had my heart set on Goody Goody’s specialty:
Mmmmmm… ![]()
I went with half a fried chicken and a belgian waffle. Actually, that’s what everyone ordered! A few sides were also ordered.
Grits and eggs:
I made fun of my sister because she ordered her eggs well done; she likes them cooked to the point to where they’re brown. I’ve eaten some pretty weird things (chicken feet, anyone?), but brown eggs? I draw the line right there.
She loved them, though! And apparently, the grits were tasty as well.
Cynt ordered a side of breakfast potatoes. Don’t these look amazing? Cheese, onions, and green peppers topped these taters.
They looked delicious, but I didn’t try them; I wanted to save room for this:
And this:
All together now!
And while I’m sure the chicken and waffles were both delicious separately, I wasn’t here to be conventional.
Ahh! That’s better! Chicken and Waffles, plus tons of maple syrup. This is how it’s done, folks!
So how was it? Perfect! The fried chicken was cooked perfectly. The skin was super crispy and flavorful, and yielded easily to hot and juicy chicken. The saltiness of the chicken paired with the sweetness of the syrup and waffles perfectly! It was like heaven in my mouth.
Service was great. Our waitress was super friendly and always kept our drinks refilled. She overheard me talking about my upcoming half marathon and told us a hilarious story about her first 5K. Runners always get cool points in my book! ![]()
