The Stadium

Good morning and happy Friday! I hope your week is going well. As for me? Well, I’m having the best week ever. My 27th birthday was yesterday! I can’t believe I’m 27. Crazy!

Oh, and since the focus of my blog is food, I must show you this picture. Every year for my birthday, my mom buys a bunch of snacks for me.

Is this crazy or what? My mom definitely knows the way into my heart! Health blogger I am not. Thanks, mom!

Speaking of my awesome mom, she took me and my sister to The Stadium a few weeks ago. This sports bar is in the Lumiere Place Casino in downtown St. Louis.

IMG_08072

It’s a pretty sweet place. I couldn’t stop snapping pictures!

IMG_08092IMG_08112IMG_08182

In true sports bar fashion, there were TVs everywhere.

IMG_08132

It was pretty empty when we arrived, so we could sit wherever we wanted. I chose the table with the iPad, naturally.

IMG_08292

Fancy!

We checked out the menu a bit. The Stadium has all of the typical bar food you’d expect. Wings, toasted ravioli, french fries. The whole nine.

However, if there’s one thing I’ve learned from dining out with my mom, it’s that the menu is useless. We just ordered a bit of everything that sounded tasty.

We started with smothered tater tots.

IMG_08432

These babies were topped with ooey gooey cheese, tomatoes, bacon, and scallions. Yum. While I enjoyed the bites that were covered in cheese, the plain tater tots were pretty…well…plain. I definitely could have used more cheese!

Speaking of cheese, we had a pretzel with cheese next.

IMG_08462

This soft pretzel was served with cheese as well as a dijon mustard. I liked the cheese, but I loved the mustard. It had a tangy kick that I was a big fan of.

Next up? Onion rings.

IMG_08492

I’m not a fan of onion rings, so I didn’t try these. But my mom and sister loved them!

While mom and sis munched on onion rings, I conquered these:

IMG_08532

Garlic and parmesan fries. I really liked these fries. They were piping hot, crispy, and super flavorful. I tried not to eat too many fries, because this was next:

IMG_08582

Chicken strips.

IMG_08612

With more fries. Steak fries.

IMG_08622

I loved the chicken strips. The steak fries? Not so much. They were okay, but I’m a fan of skinnier fries, to be honest.

As if we hadn’t sampled enough appetizers, my mom wanted to order The Tailgater:

IMG_08652

If you’re going to visit The Stadium, I recommend this sampler platter. It comes with warm pita, spinach and artichoke dip, ribs, jalapeno poppers, and chicken wings. I loved it all! And as you can see, it’s definitely enough food to split between a good number of people.

While we let the appetizers settle, my sister and I ordered a few beer flights:

IMG_08352

From left to right: Blue Moon, New Belgium 1554, Rogue Dead Guy Ale, and Fuller’s London Porter.

IMG_08392

From left to right: Guinness, Six Row IPA, Goose Island Matilda, and Paulander Heffe.

My sister and I sipped each one. My favorite? Matilda. It was smooth with a sweet finish that I loved. Since I’m no beer expert, that’s about as much detail that I can give you. Trust me – it was good!

My sister also ordered one of these:

IMG_08762

A beer float! This particular beer float contained Belgian Peach Schnapps, vanilla ice cream, and Chimay Tripel Trappist. On first sip, I wasn’t a fan. Beer and ice cream? Meh. But after the ice cream melted into the beer, it was more tolerable. I don’t know if I could drink an entire float, though.

Now on to the entrees!

I ordered the Buffalo Chicken salad: crispy fried chicken strips, lettuce, tomatoes, roasted corn, and smoked bacon.

IMG_09012

It came with your choice of ranch or blue cheese dressing, but I decided that this salad was flavorful enough without dressing. I really enjoyed it!

My sister ordered the chicken breast with a side of baked beans and potato salad.

IMG_08852

I had a bite of her chicken, and it was flavorful and moist. The potato salad was unmemorable, but the baked beans? Amazing!

My mom had the grilled ham and cheese sandwich:

IMG_08932

Cheddar, American, and Pepperjack cheese. Honey Baked Ham. Texas Toast. Oh yeah. I took a huge bite and fell in love.

All of that food, and we still wanted dessert? You better believe it.

We started with carrot cake.

IMG_09102_1

I’m normally not a fan of carrot cake, because I don’t like raisins and nuts in my cake. But this carrot cake didn’t have either nuts or raisins, so naturally I was a big fan. There are few things better than rich cream cheese icing. Truth.

Next up? Apple pie.

IMG_09142

Actually, it was more like an apple pie tart. It was served with vanilla ice cream. I had a bite and loved it! So good. I wish I could have fit more in my stomach, but I was holding out for the final dessert:

IMG_09222

Fried cheesecake bites! These were just as awesome as they looked. Piping hot cheesecake and rich caramel sauce. Mmm!

Oof. Now how’s that for a dinner? Needless to say, we had tons of leftovers.

I enjoyed my meal at The Stadium. I would definitely come back here to sample other items on the menu. Oh, and then there’s this:

Ahem. This girl loves a good challenge…

See you next week! Winking smile

Burger Bar Blogger Bomb…

by Stephanie on September 15, 2010

in American, Burgers, Dinner, Lunch

That’s a lotta B’s! I’ll explain it all, I promise!

Anyway, me and Andy went to the Burger Bar @ Lumiere Place. No…I didn’t take a picture of the entrance (I’ll also explain that later!). The atmosphere is pretty run of the mill, so you’re not really missing much with a lack of picture, I promise!

I’ve actually been to the burger bar before! However, this was:

- before my meat-eating days (I was a vegetarian for 7 years!)

- before my food-blogging days

- before my foodie days (in other words, I used to think that going to Applebee’s was a treat!*)

Anyway, it was nice to have a return visit and share the experience with Andy. I was ready to chow down on some real meat!

Oh, before I start, you should know that The Burger Bar is the creation of Hubert Keller, world renowned French chef (and contestant on Top Chef Masters!). In other words, he knows his food. We were both so excited to eat here!

Okay, the food. The premise at The Burger Bar is simple. You choose your ingredients:

Bun (Sesame, Onion, Whole Wheat, Plain, Ciabatta, Sourdough)

Protein (Black Angus, Country Natural, American Kobe, Buffalo, Veggie, Chicken Breast, Salmon, Turkey)

Toppings (Way too many to list, but everything from lettuce, tomato, and onion to the more extravagant – black truffles or lobster, anyone?)

Easy enough, right? No? Too many choices? Well, the Burger Bar also offered some delicious-sounding burgers that had everything already picked out for you.

But who wants to do that? I’m at a Burger Bar! Let me pick my own ingredients!

I went with the Buffalo burger on a ciabatta bun, topped with jalapeno bacon, pepperjack cheese, and avocado. Yum!

IMG_2371

Poor picture, I’m sorry! I’ll explain why in a bit!

Oh, I’m going backwards! I forgot to mention the appetizer we ordered to share: The Trio of Fries. It included fried pickles…

IMG_2375

Zucchini fries…

IMG_2376

And onion rings.

IMG_2377

And five dipping sauces!

IMG_2373The waiter rattled off the names so quickly, I forgot what they all were. There was a chipotle sauce of some sort that was delicious, though!

So before I get to what I thought of the food, let me explain the pictures. I know they’re of a poor quality. I debated in my mind whether I wanted to post this review. As much as the review itself is important, the pictures are really what draws readers in and entices them to stay. I’ve been to food blogs where the pictures are fantastic and mouthwatering! These pictures are neither. I did mention in a previous post that I’m having trouble figuring out my camera, and while that is true, that’s not why these pictures are so bad.

For the first time in the short history of my food blog, I felt uncomfortable and embarrassed about taking pictures of my food. I’m not going to get into too many details, but I snapped one picture of each menu item and moved on. Usually I snap 4 to 5 pictures of each item before I feel satisfied. I move the food around, I shoot from different angles, etc. But this time I felt almost pressured to get it in one shot. And no, it wasn’t Andy who made me feel this way (he always eats out with me! Hello!). But that’s it. I’m really disappointed, but am making a promise to myself to never let anyone make me feel ashamed of my blogging from now on. I love food, and I love taking pictures. It might look weird to outsiders, but I love it, and I don’t care what other people think! So there.

Whew! Didn’t mean to get so off-topic there!

So the food? Well…honestly? I wasn’t super impressed. Don’t get me wrong, everything was decent. But for the price (this stuff is NOT cheap!) and the name (Hubert Keller!) I was expecting a lot more. I was expecting for my burger to be cooked medium, as I requested (it wasn’t). I was expecting a juicy, flavorful burger (it wasn’t). I was expecting a soft, doughy bun (nope!). The burger was decent, but it wasn’t anything that knocked my socks off.

I felt the same way about the Trio of Fries. Decent, but not great. You know when you bite into a fried food, and the whole thing slides out, leaving you with a sad shell of crust? That happened with everything. It’s not fun having a warm pickle slide out of a fried shell and onto your plate. Trust me on that one.

So the food was mediocre, but what about the service? I’m sorry to say that that was lacking, too. I could tell our waiter wished he was elsewhere, but don’t take it out on us! He was cordial, but didn’t really make us feel welcome.

Anyway, on to the scores. I’ve rambled enough, right?

Food: 2 stars (out of five)

Ambiance: 2 stars

Service: 2 stars

Value: 1 star

I know, I know…rough scores. But when a Top Chef opens a restaurant, you expect to be blown away! And I wasn’t.

If you’re itching to spend $30 on a burger, save your money. Go elsewhere. Seamus McDaniels is a good start, and you won’t have to spend nearly as much!

*I hope my little jab at Applebee’s doesn’t offend you! They have some pretty tasty chicken fingers, but I’m not a huge fan of chains!

Tempura overload!

by Stephanie on June 20, 2010

in Asian, Chinese, Dinner, Japanese, Lunch, Sushi

So I’m going to start this post off by saying that I’m obsessed with sushi. OBSESSED! I love it. However, at the same time, I’m a huge sushi snob. All-you-can-eat sushi spots? No thanks. Grocery store sushi? No ma’am. Sushi at a BUFFET? (Yes, it happens!) Hecky no!

But I’ll definitely snack on sushi from a reputable restaurant, as evidenced here and here. Mmm. I love it!

So when my mom and sister wanted to hit up Asia @ Lumiere Place in STL for some eats, I was down! Sushi heaven!

This trip was sort of interesting, because my mom and sister already had an idea of what they wanted me to try. I’ll try just about ANYTHING, so I’m a guinea pig of sorts, I suppose! Oh well…I love it. :)

We started out with grilled shrimp. The menu described it as ‘honey glazed shrimp skewered and glazed to perfection’. It was served with a sweet and tangy sauce.

Yes, it was just a delicious as it looked! So yummy and flavorful. Too bad I had to share and couldn’t eat it all myself. :)

Next, we (or should I say ‘I’?) had the tempura vegetables and the tempura soft shell crab. Tempura overload, anyone?

tempura veggies

tempura softshell crab

The veggies came with a thin soy sauce, and the crab came with a thicker, sweeter teriyaki sauce.  I was in love with the teriyaki sauce, but honestly, I don’t think tempura covered foods are my thing. I would rather just eat grilled or steamed vegetables. Tempura batter just adds unnecessary crunch (and calories!) that aren’t needed, in my opinion. What’s this? Stephanie likes the HEALTHIER option? Check this girl’s temperature!

The tempura soft shell crab suffered from the same tempura overload. It was just unnecessary. The crab wasn’t too tasty, either. I’m usually a big crab fan, but this tasted super fishy. Weird.

Time for the main courses! My sister was dying to try the Kumo sushi roll. It included soft shell crab, tempura shrimp, cream cheese, avocado, fried asparagus, and was topped with spicy mayo, eel sauce, and tobiko (flying fish roe). Sounds intense! And it looked intense:

Kumo Roll

Look at all of that yummy roe! I love the stuff.  The presentation was kind of cool, but we had to stare at it for a bit and decide exactly how we were going to conquer the thing. Finally my sister knocked the tower over, and we went to town.

So how did it taste? It was just ooookay. The entire thing was coated in tempura, so it was hard to distinguish the different components of the sushi, which was a little frustrating. It was also really hard to eat. The individual pieces of the roll were HUGE, and it was hard to fit the entire piece in my mouth (TWSS!). I tried biting it in half (which I NEVER do with sushi), and it ended up making a mess (which is why I never try to do that!). It was bad. I could only eat two pieces before I had had enough.

The others in the party had better luck with their food. My mom had plain fried rice, which was pretty good.

There was also beef and broccoli:

And general Tso’s shrimp:

I didn’t try either dish, but they looked tasty!

I did have a few complaints about Asia. First of all, they had a lot of popular Chinese and Japanese appetizers and such, but NO MISO SOUP. Oooh. That’s a huge strike. You have an entire sushi menu, and no miso soup? Bad.

Secondly, they don’t have a dessert menu. Nothing would have made me happier at the end of the meal than some mochi ice cream, and they didn’t have any! Double strike.

Enough complaining. Time for some scores!

Food: 2 stars (out of five)

Ambiance: 3 stars

Service: 3 stars

Value: 3 stars

This time around the food wasn’t so great, but I would definitely give it another shot in the future! And no tempura this time. :)
