burgers

Good morning, and welcome to week 8 of the Chicken Wing Challenge! This challenge is coming to an end in a few weeks, and truthfully I’m a little sad about it! I’ve had so much fun traveling all over St. Louis in search of the best wings. Hopefully you’ve had fun reading along. Smile

Before I get into this review, I have a little something I’d like to talk about! If you follow me on Twitter, you might already have an idea of what it is. Let me give you a little hint:

IMG_20632

No? What about this?

IMG_21132

Or this?

IMG_20982

Enough of the teases; let me get straight to the point. A few weeks ago, Chevrolet contacted me about participating as a “select VIP” for their Keys to Your City campaign. The purpose of the program is to inspire St. Louis millenials (18-29 years old) to discover and explore the city’s local scene and to reintroduce Chevy as a relevant brand to their everyday lives.

In a nutshell? Chevy gave me the keys to a 2013 Malibu Eco for a week! Today is day three of my sweet car adventure, and I must say that I’m loving it. I don’t ever want to give this car back! Let me keep it, Chevy…please? Winking smile

Anyway, I intend on taking full advantage of this fuel-efficient ride, and I started with (what else?) a trip to one of my favorite St. Louis restaurants for week 8 of the Chicken Wing Challenge! Welcome to Seamus McDaniel’s!

IMG_20522

If you’ve been a long-time reader, you might remember that I blogged about Seamus McDaniel’s before. I still maintain that I had the best burger of my life there.

Even though the urge to order a burger was strong, I stuck to my guns. I had chicken wings to eat!

IMG_20262

Show me what you got, Seamus. Winking smile

My wings came out pretty quickly, and they certainly looked tasty.

IMG_20452

The wings were lightly coated in hot sauce, and just like the menu stated, they weren’t too hot or too mild. They were just right!

Taste-wise, these wings were pretty decent. I would have preferred a crispier skin, but the juicy meat of the wings made up for it. These babies were flavorful! I can’t say they were my favorite, however. There was nothing wrong with the wings, but nothing really made them stand out. They were a solid middle-of-the-pack choice. Nothing wrong with that, right?

I’m not going to post the standings this week. Instead, let’s talk about a little giveaway!

Chevrolet was generous enough to offer a pair of tickets to this weekend’s Saucy Soiree, taking place on the rooftop terrace of the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown St. Louis this Sunday, June 24th, from 5pm-10pm.

What is the Saucy Soiree? I’m so glad you asked! Smile

Sauce Magazine is hosting a fancy schmancy party for all St. Louisians with a love for local food. At this event, the winners of Sauce Magazine’s annual Readers Choice poll will be announced (before the issue is released on July 1st!).

The most exciting part? There will be 35 top restaurants, wineries, and breweries offering complimentary tastes and sips! Restaurants such as Farmhaus, Annie Gunn’s, Niche, Sidney Street, Pappy’s BBQ, Modesto, Schlafly, Chaumette Vineyards, Prime 1000, Kakao Chocolate, and Eleven Eleven Mississippi will be present to fill your belly with delicious food.

Trust me, you’re not going to want to miss this event.

How to enter the giveaway: It’s super easy! Just do the following:

1. Follow me on Facebook and post a comment here letting me know you’ve done so! In your comment, I’d also like you to finish the following sentence: “My favorite local restaurant in St. Louis is…”

That’s it! I’ll use a random number generator to pick the winner, and I’ll announce it here first thing Friday morning! Good luck, and I’ll see you in a couple of days. Smile

The Fatted Calf

by Stephanie on March 9, 2012

in American, Burgers, Lunch

A few weeks ago, I visited The Fatted Calf, a burger spot in Clayton. It was the trip that almost wasn’t. Why? Because last June, due to low sales, The Fatted Calf was set to close. For this 45 year old restaurant, it was a big deal. To some, it was a St. Louis institution!

By some miracle (increased publicity, perhaps?), shortly after that St. Louis Post Dispatch article was posted, the attendance at the burger joint really beefed up (get it? Beefed up? Okay, I’ll stop with the corny jokes…).

Anyway, I made a mental note to check out The Fatted Calf, and a few weeks ago, I finally got my chance. 1a918e6ac82f85a4d9f9c5f0e7722278

(source)

I arrived with a few friends right as they opened. Smart move. The small restaurant started filling up quickly afterwards!

I pored over the menu and finally settled on their signature Calf Burger. This 1/3 pound burger is made with charbroiled angus beef and served on a toasted sesame seed bun. I ordered it with lettuce, onion, tomato, bacon, and The Fatted Calf’s famous soft cheddar.

IMG_09912_1

Oh, and I ordered a side of steak fries as well. You can’t have a burger without french fries!

IMG_09932

The burger itself was amazing. I ordered it cooked medium, and it was perfect. I wish I would have taken a picture of how perfectly pink the middle was. Few burger joints get it right, but The Fatted Calf was spot on! Oh, and the soft cheddar? Fantastic. It was rich and creamy…it took this burger to the next level! Oh, and my fries were hot and crispy and tasted wonderful drenched in ketchup.

At the Fatted Calf, you order at the front, grab a number for your table, and the food is delivered to you. It’s not a typical sit-down restaurant, so I can’t comment on the service. Prices, however, were reasonable! My burger and fries were less than $10. Awesome.

I highly recommend The Fatted Calf for a quick and delicious burger. I can’t wait to come back!

See you next week with another fun review Smile

Bailey’s Range

by Stephanie on December 16, 2011

in American, Burgers, Dinner, Lunch

Good morning and happy Friday! I hope your December is going well and you’re staying nice and warm. Me? Well, I’m already sick of this weather. Is it spring yet?

On to happier subjects. Let’s talk about food! I recently went to Bailey’s Range; this new-ish burger joint is owned by the same man behind Bailey’s Chocolate Bar, Rooster, and Bridge Tap House!

IMG_00262

A place that specializes in burgers and shakes? How could I not adore a place like this! I also fell in love with the interior. Bailey’s Range is located in a gorgeous 2 story loft-like building downtown.

IMG_00372

IMG_00362

I sat on the second floor, which gave me a great view of the entire place. Look at this neat community table on the first floor!

IMG_00322

How cool. Smile

Enough of the scenery – let’s talk about the food! I pored over the drink menu first. And then…this caught my eye.

IMG_00312

Do you see what I see? Sweet Sweet Bacon? A bacon shake? A BACON SHAKE?!

IMG_00412

You better believe it.

I was super excited about trying the shake, but unfortunately, it failed to meet my high expectations. The ice cream was too runny (not thick and shake-like at all!) and there was way too much booze in this baby. In fact, the bourbon was all I could taste! No bueno. Sad smile

After the disappointment of the shake wore off, I was ready to dive into a burger. I decided to roll with the Pork & Apple Burger – a ground pork patty, apple butter, bacon, smoky blue cheese, and chipotle aioli.

IMG_00552

With a side of fries, of course. Smile

IMG_00442

First things first: the burger. Oh my goodness, you guys. This burger was fantastic. Hot, juicy, and flavorful. Every component of the burger worked well. I enjoyed the soft (and freshly made!) bun, the creaminess of the blue cheese, the crisp bacon. It was all so good.

And the fries! Oh, those fries. They were super crispy, hot, and again – delicious. The dipping sauces (rooster sauce on the left, BBQ sauce on the right) were fantastic as well, especially the Rooster sauce. I’m not sure exactly what is in the Rooster sauce (it’s mayo based), but it was, hands down, the best condiment I’ve had in a while. So good!

Service at Bailey’s Range was fantastic. And the prices weren’t too expensive, either!

Needless to say, I’ll definitely be back to Bailey’s. They have a wide variety of burgers to choose from, and even though my shake was a failure, everything else was tasty enough for me to return.

See you next week!

Epic Pizza & Subs

by Stephanie on December 9, 2011

in American, Burgers, Dinner, Lunch, Pizza

Oh. My. Gosh.

So I have a little blogging secret.

When I visit a restaurant, I take loads of pictures and write my review. I schedule the review to go up on the blog pretty well in advance. And since I only update the blog once a week (every Friday!), the reviews you read are usually from a visit I made a few weeks prior.

But with this place I’m about to talk about, I couldn’t wait a few weeks to write about it. I didn’t want to wait.

No. I had to talk about Epic Pizza & Subs right away. This cute little spot is located in the Soulard neighborhood of St. Louis.

IMG_03402

I visited Epic last night with my uncle.

IMG_04392

He’s friends with the owner, and he couldn’t stop raving about how good the pizza was. And if there’s one guy that really knows his food, it’s my uncle. He hasn’t steered me wrong. Ever. So when he suggested visiting the newly opened Epic Pizza, I was game. When do I ever turn down food? Answer: never.

The menu at Epic is pretty…well…epic.

IMG_03442

Lots of salads, sandwiches, sides, and pizza to choose from.

Everything sounded good, and we were hungry, so we sampled a bit of just about everything.

IMG_03622

Up first? The fries. These were garlic, parmesan, and herb fries. They were piping hot and delicious! I couldn’t get enough of these.

We also had cheese garlic bread:

IMG_03842

This was also fantastic! Cheesy, soft, warm, and delicious. This was a total carb fest. Have I mentioned how much I love carbs? Mmm.

Next up? Buffalo wings.

IMG_03892

These were spicy, which I loved. You all know how I feel about spicy food, right?

Can you believe we still had room for more food? We had mozzarella sticks next:

IMG_03712

These were super tasty, especially with the marinara sauce.

Our last appetizer? The garlic knots.

IMG_03732

I saved the best for last on purpose. These garlic knots were unbelievable. Unbelievable. They were soft, hot, cheesy, and super super garlicky. I’m so glad I wasn’t on a date! These were my absolute favorite.

After chatting and letting the food settle, we were ready for round two. Yes, there’s a round 2! We don’t play around. Obviously. Smile

We ordered an Epic Burger to share.

IMG_03992

The epic burger featured a blend of all natural ground beef, cheddar cheese (you can also choose American if that’s what you prefer), lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, and Epic sauce. We ordered it cooked medium, and it was perfect. Juicy, flavorful, and thick! I loved it.

Oh, and what is epic sauce, you ask? Check this out:

IMG_04452

This amazing sauce featured a variety of spices, including dill and adobo peppers. And crack. I’m pretty sure the secret ingredient was crack. We couldn’t stop eating this. And you better believe that we dipped everything in here! So good.

And because we could visit a place called Epic Pizza & Subs without trying pizza, we ordered a small White pizza to sample:

IMG_04002

This had mozzarella, ricotta, and another cheese whose name escapes me. That’s not important. What is important is the fact that this pizza was terrific.

I think this had something to do with it:

IMG_03462IMG_03472

Check out that pizza oven! This monster cooks pizza in two minutes flat. Is that impressive or what? I had fun watching the guys play with the dough and bring the pizza to life.

IMG_03612

Yum. Who doesn’t love hand tossed pizza?

After all of this food, I could have rolled out of the place. But dessert beckoned. And who am I to say no to dessert?

We tried the gooey butter cake and New York Cheesecake first.

IMG_04192

IMG_04182

The gooey butter cake was fantastic. My uncle and I couldn’t stop raving over how good this was. And they served it warm! I’ve never had warm gooey butter cake before, and now I’m afraid there’s no turning back. Do yourself a favor and order this. And make sure they serve it to you warm! So. Stinking. Good.

The cheesecake was amazing as well. Easily some of the best cheesecake I’ve had in my life. I especially loved the graham cracker crust. Perfect!

Just when I thought I couldn’t fit another morsel into my mouth, this comes out:

IMG_04292

Zeppole. This was a pastry that reminded me of a mix between funnel cake, a donut, and a cream puff. It was topped with caramel sauce and powdered sugar, and was filled with thick cream.

Service at Epic was attentive and speedy. Our food came out really quickly, and was always piping hot. And the prices were very reasonable. I absolutely recommend Epic Pizza & Subs. Two cheesy and garlicky thumbs up!

I’m still in shock at all of the food that we consumed. I have a feeling I’m going to be full for a very, very long time. Smile

See you next week!

Let’s smash some burgers!

by Stephanie on September 2, 2011

in American, Burgers, Dinner, Lunch

It’s Friday morning, and you’re craving some burgers, right? Right?! I knew it. I’m a mind reader, you know! Smile

Let’s hop to it.

A few weeks ago, I was invited to the soft opening of Smashburger. It’s a small restaurant chain that has a few locations around the country. However, this was the first location to open in the St. Louis area. Exciting, right?

IMG_92782

With its only location in St. Charles, Smashburger was quite a drive for me, but if there’s one thing I don’t mind, it’s traveling for food! Dedication, yo.

IMG_92322

IMG_92362

The place was pretty spiffy! Lots of bright colors. They stuck with the red and white motif throughout the entire restaurant.

I took a few minutes to study the expansive menu. Smashburger offers a ton of specialty burgers, as well as the option to create your own burger by picking the buns, toppings, cheese, etc.

I wasn’t feeling particularly creative, so I selected a few of their specialty burgers to try.

IMG_91962

The St. Louis burger came highly recommended, so I started with that. It contains provel cheese, garlic grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, and sweet bell peppers on a pretzel bun.

Before I go any further, I must state that I was extremely wary about this burger. Want to guess why? One word: provel. Remember my experience at Imo’s? I’m not a fan of provel cheese.

But I’m a trooper, and I figure I’ve eaten stranger things (chicken feet, anyone?), so I went with it. I also had an order of smashfries with this burger.

IMG_92182

IMG_92142

The burger itself was quite tasty! The pretzel bun was ridiculously soft and delicious. And the flavors of everything else melded together wonderfully! I even *gasp* enjoyed the provel cheese! That’s a first.

IMG_92062

The smashfries were fantastic! They were tossed with rosemary, olive oil, and garlic. Perfectly crispy and hot. Yum.

I had a few bites of the burger and a couple of the fries. No, I’m not on a diet! (As if!) I was saving room for my next burger: The BBQ, Bacon & Cheddar.

IMG_92252

This burger featured Maull’s BBQ sauce (a local favorite!), applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, and haystack onions on an egg bun. Combining my favorite condiment (BBQ sauce) with my favorite meat (bacon!) on a burger? There’s no way you can lose with this combo!

It was delicious. I could have used a lot more barbecue sauce, but perhaps that was done intentionally. The lack of barbecue sauce on the burger allowed the flavors of the burger to shine through. Yum.

I ordered this with a side of sweet potato smashfries. Like the original smashfries, these were also tossed with rosemary, olive oil, and garlic.

IMG_92242

While I love sweet potato fries, I wasn’t a huge fan of these. I think the rosemary gave them a really weird flavor. No bueno.

Again, I just took a few bites of the burger and a few nibbles of the fries, because I was saving more room for this:

IMG_92042

Looks like just a plain vanilla shake, right? Wrong. This, my friends, made my tastebuds do a little happy dance. It made me practically cry tears of joy. It made me want to stand on my chair and pump my fist in the air.

What could make me do this (other than bacon?)

IMG_92002

A Gooey Butter Cake Shake. Yes. YES. An entire piece of gooey butter cake from Park Avenue Coffee here in St. Louis was blended into vanilla Haagen-Daz ice cream to create this rich shake.

If you must try one thing while at Smashburger, it’s this. I don’t care if you’re on a diet; break it! It’s completely worth it.

After chowing down on this delicious food, I was a happy girl. And then something awesome happened.

The owner came out and asked me if I wanted to go in the back and try my hand at smashing a burger! Winning! Of course I said yes.

I donned an apron and said hello to the kitchen crew.

IMG_92382

He explained to me how the burger smashing process worked, as well as a few interesting facts about the meat itself (it’s fresh and never frozen!)

IMG_92752

He demonstrated the burger smashing for me first. He used a piece of parchment paper to grab a ball of meat.

IMG_92422

Smashed it onto the grill,

IMG_92432

Used a special smashing contraption to completely flatten it…

IMG_92522

Added some seasonings…

IMG_92572

And then when it was ready, the fun part – flipping the burger!

IMG_92642

After letting it cook on the other side, this was the finished product!

IMG_92662

Go ahead – lick the screen. I won’t tell anyone.

Now it was my turn! I never worked fast food or anything similar to it as a teenager, so this was completely new and exciting to me!

I threw the burger on the grill and smashed it. Then came the challenging part – flipping it!

IMG_92702IMG_92712

IMG_92722IMG_92742

I think the kitchen crew got a kick out of my lack of burger-flipping skills. Smile

Finally, I was able to get it!

IMG_92732

Woohoo!

I have a new respect for those who work in fast food. They make it look so easy! And it was hot back there.

Anyway, Smashburger was a great experience. I loved the food, and while I’m not sure I’d make the trek all the way out to St. Charles for it, I wouldn’t be opposed to visiting again if a friend wanted to.

So there you have it – I ate a burger (or two), and then I flipped one! How fun! Smile

See you next week with another fun review!

Burger Bar Blogger Bomb…

September 15, 2010

That’s a lotta B’s! I’ll explain it all, I promise! Anyway, me and Andy went to the Burger Bar @ Lumiere Place. No…I didn’t take a picture of the entrance (I’ll also explain that later!). The atmosphere is pretty run of the mill, so you’re not really missing much with a lack of picture, I [...]

Mas tapas, por favor!

April 9, 2010

So I recently went to Mosaic with a group of friends. It’s a tapas restaurant in downtown St. Louis. I used to work downtown, so I would pass this place all the time; it was nice to finally be able to step foot inside and try the food! I started with the lobster salad: lobster, [...]

Seamus McDaniel’s

March 16, 2010

Okay, so I don’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, but when a couple of friends suggested that we go out for some down and dirty burgers, I HAD to pick Seamus McDaniel’s. It’s in St. Louis, MO, in the heart of Dogtown (our Irish district). I had never visited, but after hearing so many things about [...]
