Southwest Diner!

by Stephanie on August 3, 2012

in American, Breakfast

Good morning, friends! Happy Friday! I’m so happy this week is over. Bring on the weekend!

Anyway, I recently visited a place I’ve been looking forward to trying for ages. For months, I drove by the location, only to see that it was still closed.

Well…it finally opened.

Southwest Diner! I love a good diner, and I heard amazing things about this place.

I went with a friend for breakfast. We were super hungry, so we started with some sopapillas:

These fried pieces of dough were pretty tasty, especially when I dipped them in honey! Yum.

On to the real food! I went with Jonathan’s Famous Fiery Scramble: Spicy, cheesy scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries, and toast.

I loved this! The eggs were perfectly cooked; they were fluffy and flavorful – they certainly had a deliciously spicy kick! The home fries were crispy on the outside with a pillowy soft potato center. And the bacon? Well…can you really ever go wrong with bacon?!

My friend went with the cornmeal pancakes:

IMG_25682

They look pretty plain, but the cornmeal definitely added something special to these babies. It gave them a nice texture that I really enjoyed.

Service at Southwest Diner was speedy and friendly. Prices were very reasonable. I absolutely give this place two thumbs up, and I can’t wait to go back! Heck, maybe I’ll visit for breakfast tomorrow. Winking smile

See you next week!

PW Pizza!

by Stephanie on February 24, 2012

in American, Dinner, Lunch, Pizza

Good morning and happy Friday! I hope your week is going well. Food. Let’s talk about it. Smile

I went to PW Pizza a while ago with a friend. This new-ish pizza joint is owned by the same people behind the lovely Vin de Set (review coming soon, I promise!). As delicious as Vin de Set is, I knew that PW Pizza would be just as tasty.

We started with some Spinach & Artichoke Dip:

IMG_05492

It was served with warm and chewy pita bread.

Oh my. You guys…this was the best spinach dip I’ve ever tasted. I’m not even kidding! It was served piping hot; it was literally bubbling! I’m drooling right now. Sorry…

Anyway, paired with the yummy pita bread, this was an amazing start to the meal.

Next up? Pizza, of course! PW has a number of specialty pizzas, but I felt like creating my own, so I did!

I picked my crust (honey whole wheat), sauce (BBQ sauce for me!), cheese (mozzarella, please!), and toppings. On one half of the pizza I ordered pulled pork; on the other half I went with bacon and green pepper. Oh yeah, babe!

IMG_05552

Amazing. The crust was soft and a little sweet. And the BBQ sauce was the perfect complement to both sides of my pizza. Thanks to the filling Spinach and Artichoke dip, I could only manage to down one slice, but that just meant one thing: lots of leftovers! Aren’t pizza leftovers the greatest?

Service at PW was fantastic. Our waitress was bubbly and super friendly. Prices were reasonable as well.

I can’t recommend PW Pizza enough. Let me know if you decide to visit! You can always tweet me the details. Winking smile

See ya next week!

Bailey’s Range

by Stephanie on December 16, 2011

in American, Burgers, Dinner, Lunch

Good morning and happy Friday! I hope your December is going well and you’re staying nice and warm. Me? Well, I’m already sick of this weather. Is it spring yet?

On to happier subjects. Let’s talk about food! I recently went to Bailey’s Range; this new-ish burger joint is owned by the same man behind Bailey’s Chocolate Bar, Rooster, and Bridge Tap House!

IMG_00262

A place that specializes in burgers and shakes? How could I not adore a place like this! I also fell in love with the interior. Bailey’s Range is located in a gorgeous 2 story loft-like building downtown.

IMG_00372

IMG_00362

I sat on the second floor, which gave me a great view of the entire place. Look at this neat community table on the first floor!

IMG_00322

How cool. Smile

Enough of the scenery – let’s talk about the food! I pored over the drink menu first. And then…this caught my eye.

IMG_00312

Do you see what I see? Sweet Sweet Bacon? A bacon shake? A BACON SHAKE?!

IMG_00412

You better believe it.

I was super excited about trying the shake, but unfortunately, it failed to meet my high expectations. The ice cream was too runny (not thick and shake-like at all!) and there was way too much booze in this baby. In fact, the bourbon was all I could taste! No bueno. Sad smile

After the disappointment of the shake wore off, I was ready to dive into a burger. I decided to roll with the Pork & Apple Burger – a ground pork patty, apple butter, bacon, smoky blue cheese, and chipotle aioli.

IMG_00552

With a side of fries, of course. Smile

IMG_00442

First things first: the burger. Oh my goodness, you guys. This burger was fantastic. Hot, juicy, and flavorful. Every component of the burger worked well. I enjoyed the soft (and freshly made!) bun, the creaminess of the blue cheese, the crisp bacon. It was all so good.

And the fries! Oh, those fries. They were super crispy, hot, and again – delicious. The dipping sauces (rooster sauce on the left, BBQ sauce on the right) were fantastic as well, especially the Rooster sauce. I’m not sure exactly what is in the Rooster sauce (it’s mayo based), but it was, hands down, the best condiment I’ve had in a while. So good!

Service at Bailey’s Range was fantastic. And the prices weren’t too expensive, either!

Needless to say, I’ll definitely be back to Bailey’s. They have a wide variety of burgers to choose from, and even though my shake was a failure, everything else was tasty enough for me to return.

See you next week!

Farmhaus

by Stephanie on October 21, 2011

in American, Dinner, Lunch

Good morning! Or afternoon. Or evening. Whatever! Winking smile

Right now, I’m lounging in my pajamas, enjoying my vacation day, and getting really really excited about this. Oh yeah. In two days, I’m running a marathon! 26.2 miles. I’m scared. Hold me!

Just kidding (about the being scared part, not the marathon!). I’ve been training for this baby for months, and I’m as ready as I’ll ever be!

Can I attribute some of my preparedness to the delicious fuel I’ve been consuming lately? Oh my. I recently went to one of the most buzzed-about restaurants in St. Louis with this guy:

 IMG_96432

Say hello to my dad!

He was in town recently, and we celebrated by going to Farmhaus. If there’s one person who adores good food as much as I do, it’s my dad! Doesn’t he look spiffy? Smile

Farmhaus is located in the Lindenwood Park neighborhood in St. Louis, and they specialize in farm-to-table fare. They use fresh seasonal ingredients in all of their dishes, which means the menu changes all the time, depending on what’s in season. I love that!

We started with the conch fritters.

IMG_96452

Aren’t they cute? These deep fried balls of deliciousness were served with a roasted corn, jalapeno, and sriracha mayonnaise. They were quite tasty, even though we were both a bit disappointed that the conch wasn’t more pronounced in the dish. The flavor was less ‘conch’ and more ‘glorified hushpuppy’.

As a second starter, we ordered the chilled roast beef.

IMG_96532

This was much better! The chilled roast beef was served alongside horseradish panna cotta, truffle whipped cream, jus, and lavash, which is the thing you see in the front.

Wowza. The flavors in this dish were amazing! We constructed our own little open faced sandwiches by dipping the roast beef in the jus, topping it with the panna cotta and whipped cream, and eating it on the lavash. I’m not sure if that was the right way to eat the dish, but it sure was delicious!

For my entrée, I went with the bacon wrapped meatloaf:

IMG_96582

The bacon wrapped meatloaf was topped with a crunchy onion topping and served over sweet and yukon gold mashed potatoes. Next to it was a tomato-merlot reduction and sous vide pearl onions.

It was very delicious. The meatloaf was flavorful and juicy, and the bacon took it over the top. I loved the mashed potatoes as well! And the portion size was perfect. That, along with the two starters made for the ideal amount of food.

My dad went with the red grouper:

IMG_96622

It was served with grilled hickory smoked sausage, sauteed bok choy, and pepper jelly. I tried a bite, and the fish was so buttery and rich! It practically melted in my mouth. In other words, I loved it! My dad was a huge fan as well. Again, the portion size was small, but with the starters, it ended up being the perfect amount of food.

I loved Farmhaus, and my dad did too. I can’t wait to come back to check out more of the menu!

See ya next week. And wish me luck on the marathon! Smile
