July 2012

Okay…so I’m a little embarrassed.

The place I’m reviewing today has been talked about for at least a few years now. It’s been all over The Travel Channel and The Food Network. It has won numerous awards, and if you’re from St. Louis (and hey – maybe even if you’re not!) you’ve heard of this place.  It’s solidified itself as THE place to visit for good barbecue in St. Louis.

IMG_24492

I’m talking about Pappy’s Smokehouse, of course! While I’ve definitely visited Pappy’s on a number of occasions, all of my visits were before I started this little blog.

So when a friend mentioned that he had never been to Pappy’s (whaaaaaat?!), I knew we had to visit. And I brought my trusty camera along for the ride. Winking smile

We arrived early on a Saturday morning for some of the good stuff. Pappy’s doesn’t begin serving food until 11am, but we arrived around 10:30am to get a good spot in line.

Turns out we weren’t the only ones with that idea.

IMG_24202

Wowza!

While we waited patiently in line, I took a look around. There are lots of things to keep you entertained. I was a huge fan of the wall of barbecue sauce.

IMG_24232

Did you know that barbecue sauce is my favorite condiment? What I wouldn’t do to have every one of those bottles in my house!

Standing in line also gave us plenty of time to decide what to order. I briefly considered ordering the Adam Bomb:

IMG_24282

What’s in an Adam Bomb? Well…it’s a full slab of ribs, beef brisket, a pulled pork sandwich, 1/4 chicken, four sides, and a hot link frito pie.

I’m kidding, of course. I like to eat, but I don’t think I could eat that much food! I’ll leave that to Man vs. Food. Winking smile

I decided to go with a half rack of ribs, deep fried corn on the cob, and potato salad instead.

IMG_24452     IMG_24462

IMG_24442

Oh yeah, baby.

I loved these ribs. After getting some practice at Bogart’s a few months ago, I knew exactly how to dominate this sucker. No rib left behind!

The potato salad was also pretty good, but it didn’t blow me away.

The corn on the cob? Well, as much as I adore corn on the cob, this didn’t do anything for me. The flavor was good, but it was very unpleasant to eat. I took one bite, and immediately, sticky corn found its way into every crevice of my mouth. Having corn stuck in your teeth is not fun.

My friend went with a pulled pork sandwich, sweet potato fries, and baked beans.

IMG_24382IMG_24392

IMG_24362

Everything on his plate was delicious. The baked beans were good, the sweet potato fries blew me away, and the pulled pork sandwich was delicious.

It helped that Pappy’s has some incredible barbecue sauce.

IMG_24342

I tried all three and liked the Sweet Baby Jane sauce the most. Delish!

Although everything at Pappy’s was tasty, It’s safe to say that the ribs were my absolute favorite. If you only order one thing while you’re at Pappy’s, order the ribs. You won’t be sorry.

Speaking of ribs…it’s announcement time! I love announcements. They’re fun, aren’t they?

While chowing down on wings at the Marathon Chicken Wing Eating Event a few weeks ago, I brought up the idea of doing another challenge. Oh yeah, baby. You think I was finished after finding the best bread pudding in St. Louis and the best chicken wings in St. Louis? I’m just getting started!

The idea of doing a Best Ribs challenge was mentioned, and I liked the idea, but I also knew that the obvious winners of a rib challenge in St. Louis would be Pappy’s Smokehouse and Bogart’s Smokehouse. These two places are easily the most popular barbecue joints in the city.

So I made a decision: I’m going to do a Best Ribs Challenge, but since I believe Pappy’s and Bogart’s have an unfair advantage, I’m leaving them out. This blog is called Off The Eaten Path, and I’m all about giving the little guys a time to shine. While I absolutely adore Pappy’s and Bogart’s, I know that there are other amazing barbecue places in this city. I just know it!

The setup is going to be the same as the Bread Pudding Challenge and the Chicken Wing Challenge. I’m going to visit 10 local restaurants in St. Louis to try their ribs. Starting on August 1st, I will post the results of my visits.

However, instead of stretching out this challenge to 10 weeks, I’m shortening it to 5! That’s right – I’m going to blog about two rib restaurants a week. Where are my stretchy pants?

I hope you’re just as excited about this new challenge as I am. Bring on the meat!

I already have an idea of the ten places I want to visit, but of course, that could change. Give me your input! Where are the best places to find good ribs in St. Louis? I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

Have a great weekend, and see you this Wednesday with Week 1 of the Ribs Challenge. Smile

Chicken Wing Challenge WINNER!

by Stephanie on July 20, 2012

in American, challenge, chicken wings

It’s time.

Here’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for.

It’s been ten weeks in the making.

I’ve eaten enough chicken to last me the rest of my life. Can I tell you a secret? I don’t want to see another wing for a long time! Smile

Last Saturday, the Marathon Chicken Wing Eating Extravaganza took place. Over the course of the day, my friends and I visited my top three picks for the best chicken wings: The Post, Trainwreck, and The Shaved Duck.

First up? The Post. Sam, Patrick, Chung, and Joselyn (not pictured) gave The Post’s Spicy Garlic Wings a try.

IMG_23992

IMG_24012

IMG_24022

These wings were tasty, but they weren’t as good as when I had them the first time around. I asked everyone to rate the wings on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best). The results from round 1?

Joselyn – 7

Chung – 6

Sam – 6

Patrick – 6

Me – 6

Average: 6.2

Round two led us to Trainwreck. Time for some wreck wings! This crowd was a bit larger; John, Patrick, Sam, Chung, Joselyn, Laura, Doug, Drew, Sarah, Derrick, and Stephanie joined me this time around.

IMG_24092

IMG_24122

Bring on the meat!

IMG_24072

Round 2 results:

Joselyn – 5

Chung – 8

Sam – 8

Patrick – 7

Doug – 7

Laura – 7

Drew – 4

Stephanie – 8

Sarah – 6

Derrick – 4

Me – 5

Average: 6.3

Trainwreck beat The Post, but just barely. The wings at Trainwreck are a bit salty, which some people loved. Others weren’t a fan of the salty taste of these wings.

Our final stop was The Shaved Duck. Sam and Joselyn joined me at this stop (the only two to come to all three places! Way to go, guys!), along with John, Barb, Drew, Patrick, and Charles (unpictured).

Round 3 results:

Joselyn – 9

Sam – 9

Barb – 8.5

John – 9

Charles – 9

Drew – 9

Patrick – 9

Me – 9

Average: 8.9

Folks, we have a winner!

The Shaved Duck’s smoked wings with habanero mango sauce? These were the clear winner. Everyone fell in love with the smoky flavor of these wings, and with the sauce, they were unbeatable. These were my favorite, and I’m glad everyone seemed to agree with me!

Overall, the chicken wing challenge was a success. I had a lot of fun exploring St. Louis restaurants and sampling wings from all over the city. I hope you all had just as much fun reading about my adventures. I’m already thinking about my next challenge…any suggestions? Winking smile

See you next week!

Tokyo Sushi!

by Stephanie on July 13, 2012

in Asian, Japanese, Sushi

Happy Friday! I’m thrilled that this week is finally over. Bring on the weekend! Tomorrow is the Marathon Chicken Wing Eating Event – have you signed up yet? I need your help to choose the best chicken wings in St. Louis! Don’t let me down. Smile

Moving on.

If I had to pick a favorite food, I’m pretty sure that sushi would be near the top of my list. That may be surprising to hear, since I don’t blog about the stuff very often, but trust me – I absolutely adore sushi!

So when a friend suggested meeting at a sushi bar for lunch, I happily agreed. I suggested one of my favorites (second only to Kampai):

Tokyo Sushi! This sushi bar is nestled in a southern county of St. Louis (South County for the locals!) in an unassuming strip mall.

The outside of the establishment is pretty plain, but the inside tells another story.

IMG_21832

Cute!

I pored over the menu, and finally decided to go with a lunch special. But which one to choose?

IMG_21802

I settled with option B – 4 pieces of nigiri sushi with a spicy tuna roll. My lunch special came with miso soup and a small salad.

IMG_21852

The miso soup was a little salty, a little savory, and so delicious.

IMG_21892

You can’t see it here, but this soup contained pieces of tofu, seaweed, and mushrooms. So warm and satisfying!

After a short wait, my food arrived.

IMG_21912

So pretty!

Looks aside, this sushi was pretty fantastic. The fish was super fresh and practically melted in my mouth. And the lunch portion was the perfect size; not too much food, but not too little, either.

Service at Tokyo Sushi was friendly and efficient. I appreciated that our waiter was quick, since we both had to go back to work.

Two thumbs up for Tokyo Sushi from this girl! I highly recommend visiting if you’re in the area.

Have a great weekend! Maybe I’ll see a few of you tomorrow? It’s not too late to RSVP! Winking smile

Hello, friends! As you (hopefully) know, for the past 10 weeks I’ve been doing the Chicken Wing Challenge here on the blog. I visited ten local St. Louis restaurants in search of the best chicken wings.

Well, I’ve narrowed it down to my top 3. The winner will be selected (by you!) this Saturday during the Marathon Chicken Wing Eating Event (McWee!). I can’t wait, and I hope you can make it! It will be chicken-a-licious. Yes, I just made that word up. Winking smile

Anyway, while I’ve definitely enjoyed some fabulous wings during this challenge, it’s been terribly difficult for me to not draw comparisons to some other wings. Some wings I’m about to show you right now.

Can I tell you a secret?

I’ve been wowed over the past ten weeks with the wings that St. Louis restaurants have to offer. I may have even chosen my personal favorite restaurant wings.

But my all-time favorite wings?

You can’t find these in any local restaurant.

IMG_22462IMG_22492

The recipe? Well, that’s top secret.

IMG_22812IMG_22762

And these wings only make an appearance during very special occasions.

IMG_22212IMG_22422

My favorite chicken wings are made by this woman right here:

IMG_22322

Hi, Mom! Smile

IMG_22352

IMG_22862

Of course, I may be a little biased. She is my mom, after all. Winking smile

So we decided to put my mom’s wings to the test.

IMG_22072

And that is how the Chicken Wing Extravaganza was born.

A few days ago, my mom (along with the help of my sister!) prepared hundreds of her famous chicken wings.

IMG_22152IMG_22172

Friends and family were invited over to give the wings a try. It wasn’t hard to find willing volunteers. Winking smile

IMG_22552IMG_23062

IMG_23372IMG_23282

Wings were sampled.

IMG_22612IMG_23312IMG_22232

IMG_22392IMG_22262IMG_23222

IMG_23362IMG_23382

Wet naps were passed around. (And boy, did we need them!)

IMG_23152

And refreshments were served.

My grandpa’s famous lemonade:

IMG_22562

And a few other…ahem…choice beverages. Winking smile

IMG_23472IMG_23602

After everyone had their fill of wings, votes were (anonymously) cast.

IMG_23342IMG_23272IMG_23202

IMG_23692

The verdict?

IMG_23722IMG_23762

IMG_23802IMG_23862

IMG_23712

Da Bomb? Why yes…yes, it’s safe to say I agree with that. Winking smile

The Chicken Wing Extravaganza was most definitely a success. We all had a blast, and it couldn’t have happened without the hard work of my mom and sister.

IMG_22952

Although I can’t fairly crown my mom’s wings as the winner of the Chicken Wing Challenge (that winner will be determined this Saturday!), I can certainly admit that these wings hold a special place in my heart. Smile

See you in a few days!

Hello there! Was anyone else’s week as weird as mine was? I think having Wednesday off for Independence Day totally screwed up my week. I’m glad it’s Friday, but it certainly doesn’t feel like one!

As you know, I finished up Week 10 of the Chicken Wing Challenge. I can’t believe how quickly these ten weeks have zoomed by! Honestly, I felt like I could have made this a 20 week challenge; you all suggested so many chicken wing places on Facebook and Twitter! I wish I could have visited them all, but there’s only so much chicken one girl can eat. Smile

Before I announce my top three choices for chicken wings, I’ll do a quick rundown of each place I visited, in order. Let’s do this!

Week 1: Poor Richard’s

What a way to kick off the challenge! These wings were very tasty. I loved the crispy breading, the juicy meat, and the spicy sauce! And at $8.29 for 12 wings, this was one of the best deals during the challenge.

Week 2: Trainwreck Saloon

Oh, my beloved wreck wings. These wings were first roasted and then flash fried. The creative preparation definitely paid off; these suckers were good. The breading was crispy and very well seasoned. The chicken itself was delicious. I didn’t even mind that they were un-sauced!

Week 3: St. Louis Wing Co.

What’s better than one flavor of chicken wings? Four flavors of chicken wings! The flavors I tried? Honey BBQ, Traditional Hot, Thai Sweet Chili, and Sesame Ginger Teriyaki. Although I was impressed (and a little overwhelmed!) with all of the different flavors to choose from, these wings weren’t my favorite. The sauces were delicious, but the chicken itself was not very good.

Week 4: The Post Sports Bar & Grill

The Post’s Spicy Garlic Wings were baked instead of fried. Does that mean they’re healthy? Winking smile Healthy or not, these wings were fantastic! I adored the spicy flavor of the garlic sauce, and the meat was tender, moist, and hot. What more could a food blogger ask for?

Week 5: Culpepper’s

I have a strict no chains rule when it comes to my food blog, but I was willing to bend the rules a bit to try the wings at Culpepper’s. There was no way I could skip this place with all of the praise it receives! I ordered the Original style, as well as the Chipotle BBQ flavor.

Well, I wish I would have skipped it. These wings were slimy and overcooked, and the sauces tasted off. I’ve never met a BBQ sauce I didn’t like. Until now. No bueno, Culpepper’s!

Week 6: Southtown Pub

Okay, so I was a little peeved that Southtown Pub called these wings “jumbo” (look at them – they’re not jumbo!), but after I sunk my teeth into one of these puppies, all was forgiven. Southtown’s wings are plump, coated in a fabulous dry rub, and have a smoky flavor. These wings remind me of a summer BBQ. Amazing. Just amazing.

Week 7: Syberg’s

So I broke my “no chains” rule again. When will I ever learn? Although the wings at Syberg’s were generously coated with sauce (I needed a wet nap!), they were by far the most awful wings I’ve ever tasted in my life. I’m not even exaggerating. Slimy. Dry meat. And the sauce. Who came up with this god-awful sauce?! Imagine coating your wings in warm mayonnaise, and you’ll get an idea of what these things tasted like to me. I’m still shuddering at the thought.

Week 8: Seamus McDaniel’s

After the previous week’s failboat, I was anxious to cleanse my palate with some decent wings. I had high hopes for the wings at Seamus McDaniel’s, and although they weren’t bad, they weren’t mind-blowing, either. They were pretty…average. Average is not terrible, but I’m looking for the best wings in St. Louis, and these just were not it.

Week 9: O! Wing Plus

O! Wing Plus reminded me a lot of St. Louis Wing Co., in that it had many flavors of wings to choose from. I went with the two most popular flavors: Garlic Parmesan and O’s Original. Although the Garlic Parmesan wings didn’t blow me away, the O’s Original more than made up for it. The sauce was sticky, sweet, and complemented the savory flavor of the chicken so well. Pure perfection!

Week 10: The Shaved Duck

The Shaved Duck: last, but certainly not least! These smoked wings were served with a mango, ginger, and habanero sauce that rocked my world. However, these wings definitely did not need sauce. The smoky flavor of these wings made my toes curl – they were that awesome. I cannot find a single bad thing to say about these wings; I loved everything about them. And they were even good cold!

So what are my top 3 choices? After much thought, I narrowed it down:

1. The Shaved Duck

2. Trainwreck

3. The Post

Woo! My job is done, folks. Now it’s up to you to help me choose the winner! I’ve been hinting at this for a while (and if you follow me on Facebook, you already have the details), but here’s the deal:

On July 14th, the Marathon Chicken Wing Eating Event (McWee!) is happening. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a day full of eating chicken wings! The tentative schedule is as follows:

11am – visit The Post. Chow down on some wings.

3pm – stop by Trainwreck. Eat more wings.

7pm – hit up The Shaved Duck. Eat bread pudding and smothered fries. Just kidding…we’re eating more wings!

If you’re interested in being on the panel (and I hope you are!) join me to chow down! While I will be re-visiting all three spots, there’s no pressure for you to visit all three. If you just want to stop by one or two restaurants, that’s fine! At the end of the night, we’ll tally up the votes and we’ll choose a winner. Sounds like fun, right?

If you’re interested, please RSVP here. I hope to see you all there! Make sure to wear your stretchy pants; you’ll certainly need them! Winking smile

Enjoy your weekend, and I’ll see you next week!

Chicken Wing Challenge, Week 10: The Shaved Duck!

July 4, 2012

Why hello there! Hope you’re having a happy 4th of July! Any fun plans? I have the day off, so I’m relaxing and catching up on some much needed sleep…and eating delicious food, of course! So…this is it. This is it. Week 10 of the Chicken Wing Challenge is here! I can’t believe it’s over [...]
