1904 Steakhouse

So I’m torn. And a little (okay, a lot) frustrated.

I want to share this review with you all, but a big part of me doesn’t want to.

Can I tell you a secret? I’m a huge perfectionist. When I go to restaurants, I easily take hundreds of pictures. In many cases, I’ll take dozens of pictures of the same dish from different angles. I’m not a professional photographer, but I try my best, and I’m always working to get the best photo.

Sometimes the photography gods are looking down on me and I get the perfect shot.

Like I said, I’m not a professional, but I try really hard to get good shots of food. After all, we eat with our eyes first, right? And what’s a good food blog without good pictures?

But sometimes I have bad luck.

Really bad luck.

99% of the time, it has to do with lighting. A lot of restaurants nowadays have really dim lighting, which makes it hard to get a good shot. And I refuse to use my flash when it comes to food photography. It washes out the food and makes it look awful. Don’t do it.

Dim lighting is challenging to work with, but I’ve managed to do it with pretty good results.

However, 1904 Steakhouse? Not only do they have dim lighting, they have dim red lighting.

IMG_16442

My work was definitely cut out for me. And while I’m not proud of the results, I do feel that the steakhouse was blogworthy. So I’m going for it.

Don’t judge me. Smile

Anyway, I visited 1904 Steakhouse a few weeks ago with my mom and sister for our monthly girls dinner. I was excited to finally try this restaurant; it replaced Jeff Ruby’s after it closed, so I was interested to see how it would compare.

The interior was amazing.

IMG_16482

IMG_16502

After we were seated, our waiter brought out some of the tastiest bread I’ve had in quite some time.

IMG_16562

It was served with regular butter, as well as an herbed garlic butter.

IMG_16612

Delicious!

For my entrée, I went with one of the specials for the evening: three small filets, topped with béarnaise sauce. One filet was topped with lobster, one with a scallop, and one with shrimp.

IMG_16632

All three rested on a bed of asparagus.

I ordered my steak cooked medium rare, and while it wasn’t cooked properly (can anyone cook a steak to order nowadays? Anyone?!), the flavors were decent. I would have preferred a lighter hand on the béarnaise sauce; it was so rich I could barely finish half my dish! But the bites that I did have were very good.

My sister ordered the steak and lobster:

IMG_16692

And my mom insisted that I take a picture of her lonely steak:

IMG_16842

Happy, mom? Smile

We ordered a few sides to go with our meal. Up first? Lobster Macaroni & Cheese:

IMG_16792

This was creamy and delicious, but super rich. I could only have a few bites!

Next up? Roasted brussels sprouts.

IMG_16752

They were crispy and cooked with bacon. I enjoyed these, but my sister and mom weren’t huge fans.

Finally, it was time for dessert. Sticky toffee pudding was on the menu, and it came highly recommended by our waiter, so we tried it.

IMG_17002

It was topped with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. I really liked it! It doesn’t compare to my beloved bread pudding, but it certainly held its own. Smile

Service was fantastic. When my mom’s steak came back ridiculously overcooked (she ordered medium and it was definitely well done), the head chef came out to our table with a new steak and apologized in person. It was a nice touch (and the reason why our dessert was on the house!).

Would I come back to 1904 Steakhouse? I’m not sure. My food was decent, but it was not mindblowing. The fact that my steak was overcooked was a bit of a turnoff as well.

And maybe, just maybe, I still can’t get over how awful the lighting was here. Even after running these through photoshop and attempting to white balance them, they were still really red. Bah.

See you next week with a great review (and better pictures, I promise!) Winking smile

Annie Gunn’s

by Stephanie on April 6, 2012

in American, Burgers, Dinner, Steakhouse

Howdy! Remember when I visited Annie Gunn’s for the Bread Pudding Challenge? Let me refresh your memory:

IMG_11302

Banana Bread Pudding, drowning in caramel sauce. Yum.

Well, while I visited Annie Gunn’s, I also had some savory food. As much as I’d love to eat a huge hunk of bread pudding for lunch, I knew that I needed to get some ‘real’ food into my system first.

I pored over the menu. While Annie Gunn’s is best known for their steaks, I wasn’t in the mood for something quite that heavy. I went with the next best thing – a hamburger!

Annie Gunn’s offers a number of different burgers (and even a mini burger for mini appetites!). I went with Annie Gunn’s Hamburger Special Blend. Freshly ground prime striploin, ribeye, angus tenderloin and brisket made up this unique burger. I ordered it topped with pepperjack cheese and bacon, of course Winking smile

IMG_11102

Looks pretty amazing, right? It was served with a side of fantastic french fries. Seriously…those babies were amazing!

But back to the burger.

IMG_11142

I ordered it cooked medium, as usual.

IMG_11162

They actually did a pretty decent job! I prefer my burger a tiny bit pinker, though. Maybe I should start ordering my burgers medium rare?

In any event, my burger was delicious. It was juicy and flavorful. The cheese and bacon added a wonderful touch. And you know I had to top it was BBQ sauce too, right? Smile Uh. May. Zing.

Service at Annie Gunn’s was a little less than stellar, to be completely honest. I was surprised – I expected a restaurant of this caliber to have flawless service.

First strike? My waitress didn’t acknowledge me until 10 minutes after I was seated! Unacceptable.

Strike two: when she finally did acknowledge me, she asked me if I would like a menu. Say what? This question would make sense if I was seated at the bar, but I wasn’t – I was at a table in the dining room. Why wouldn’t I want to see a menu? Weird question, and it was a little off-putting.

Another slight annoyance: no bread was brought to my table. I realized that every other table around me had bread, while I was left breadless. By the time my waitress came around, she had my burger in hand, so I didn’t mention the absence of bread. Not a big deal, but I was disappointed that the attention to detail wasn’t completely there.

These comments are not to bash Annie Gunn’s or try to dissuade anyone from visiting the restaurant. It’s a pretty good restaurant, and I would probably go back. But the service is something that left a bad taste in my mouth, and I feel that it’s only fair that I mention it.

Again, aside from the spotty service, Annie Gunn’s did a pretty decent job. And the food was near perfect, which is all that this food blogger can ask for. Winking smile

See you next week!

Good morning and happy Wednesday! I hope your Valentine’s Day was lovely. Me? I chilled at home with my favorite Valentine:

308896_779892292764_33300054_38173842_668470451_n

Say hi to Walcott! She’s my baby Smile

Okay, enough mushiness. Let’s talk food! For this week’s Bread Pudding Challenge I headed to Annie Gunn’s in Chesterfield. This fancy pants restaurant is well-known for their steaks, but I was here for one thing and one thing only: bread pudding!

Annie Gunn’s has a banana bread pudding with Maker’s Mark caramel sauce. Sounds delish, right?

IMG_11272

It was. This was served in a giant bowl. I’ve never been served bread pudding in a bowl until now! And with the crazy amount of caramel sauce that was served, I now understand why. It was practically swimming in it!

IMG_11302

When this was first presented to me, I was wary. I was almost sure that this bread pudding would be soggy and custard-y, due to all of the caramel sauce.

But somehow…it wasn’t. It was a little soft, but not so much that it was custard like. It still had the firmness that I love in bread pudding. So texture-wise, it was spot on.

Taste-wise? Another home run! The banana flavor was pretty pronounced, and I loved how it was garnished with banana slices. This dessert was like bananas foster in bread pudding form! Delicious.

I give the bread pudding at Annie Gunn’s two thumbs up. But how does it compare to the other 5 spots I’ve tried so far? Here are my personal standings (1 is the best!):

1. Remy’s

2. Annie Gunn’s

3. Bridge Tap House

4. Harvest

5. Cyrano’s

6. Café Eau

As you can see, the BP at Annie Gunn’s didn’t knock Remy’s out of first place for me, but it’s a very close second! Poor Café Eau is still at the bottom for me. Blech.

I can’t wait to see what BP ends up being Jess’ favorite! Only a few more weeks left of the bread pudding challenge!

See you this Friday with a restaurant review! Smile

Kelly English Steakhouse

by Stephanie on January 6, 2012

in American, Bread Pudding, Dessert, Dinner, Steakhouse

Good morning, friends! How’s this Friday treating you? St. Louis friends – isn’t this weather absolutely amazing? I wish it would be this nice all winter. Is that too much to ask for?

Okay, enough small talk. Let’s talk food! If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you’ll know that I was invited to a media-only preview of Kelly English Steakhouse a while ago.

IMG_98682

Kelly English Steakhouse is the newest steakhouse at Harrah’s Casino in Maryland Heights.

Now, I don’t eat a ton of steak, but I do appreciate a good hunk of meat every once in a while. Remember my review of the amazing Jeff Ruby’s? Gosh. I’m still bummed that it’s gone. At least I’ll always have pictures to remind me of better times…right? Smile

So when I was invited to Kelly English to try out their menu, I had high expectations. The interior of the steakhouse was gorgeous.

I forgot I was inside a casino! I loved the dim lighting and the amazing décor that lined the walls. Breathtaking!

I, along with the other bloggers/print media/tv media folks, were seated and a menu was brought out. We were told to order ‘whatever we wanted’. Oh my!

IMG_98742IMG_98702

IMG_98722IMG_98712

I settled on the Surf and Turf for my entrée. But more on that later. Before we could speak a single word, a ton of starters were brought out! First up? The Lobster Knuckle Sandwich:

IMG_98872

Doesn’t this look just beautiful? It was served with tarragon and tomatoes on a crusty slice of brioche. I adored this, even though it was really hard to eat. I couldn’t take a bite without all of the toppings falling off!

Next up? A Fried Oyster and Blue Cheese Salad.

IMG_98982

This one is pretty self-explanatory: A pile of fried oysters served alongside a blue cheese salad. I enjoyed the salad portion, but the fried oysters were a little too salty for me.

We also had a Carpaccio with avocado, cilantro, and lime:

IMG_98932

Honestly? I wasn’t a fan of this. The carpaccio was too tough for me; it wasn’t tender and buttery like I was expecting (and hoping!)

Next up? Potato skins with crème fraiche, tuna tartare, caviar, and lemongrass.

IMG_98812

These made up for the failed carpaccio! These tasty potato skins may have been my favorite. The potato skins were perfectly crispy, and I loved the flavor combination of the crème fraiche, tuna tartare, and caviar. Delicious. I was sad I had to share!

Finally, the final starter was brought out: Gulf Shrimp Remoulade. This was served on a slice of brioche with a poached egg.

IMG_98762

Look at how pretty it is! It may have been my favorite presentation of the night. The poached egg on top was so cute! I loved the spicy flavor of the shrimp paired with the lightness of the poached egg. Unfortunately, due to the brioche, this was another dish that was difficult to eat.

Now that the starters were out of the way, it was time to place our orders for our entrée. Like I said before, I went with the Surf and Turf. This dish was highly recommended by Chef Kelly English himself, so I had to go with it. The dish came with a salad, so I ordered the grilled caesar:

IMG_99112

This was like no other caesar salad I’ve ever tried! The presentation was super cool. They grilled the romaine lettuce, and topped it with anchovy and parmesan. That, along with the accompanying brioche “crouton” made for a fun dining experience. I only had a few bites, because I was saving room for this:

IMG_99312

My long-awaited Surf and Turf! This dish, aside from being recommended by Kelly English, was also featured on the Food Network show “Best Thing I Ever Ate”. It was described as New York Strip stuffed with fried oysters and blue cheese over bacon and potato hash, with bordelaise and hollandaise sauce. Decadent, right? I ordered my steak cooked medium rare. I had high hopes for this dish.

And honestly? The flavors were perfect. Every single aspect of the dish, flavor-wise, was right on point. My one complaint?

My steak wasn’t cooked correctly. My medium-rare steak was medium-well; almost well-done.

Sigh. A steakhouse that can’t cook their steaks properly? A big no-no. I wanted to love this dish. I really wanted to love this dish. And had my steak been cooked properly, this would have been amazing. But there’s a reason why you should never order your steak well-done: it becomes incredibly tough and dry. And it made me so sad to chew on this dry and rubbery steak. Sure, the hollandaise sauce helped a bit. But there’s little that can be done for an improperly cooked steak.

I had a few bites of my steak, and then the dessert menu was brought to the table:

IMG_99542

That cheered me up a bit. Smile

I ordered the bread pudding:

IMG_99572

It was served in an adorable ramekin, and was topped with caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream, and candied pecans.

The bread pudding itself was soft, warm, and texture-wise, pretty darn perfect. But the ice cream and/or caramel sauce ruined it. They were so bitter! I couldn’t enjoy this dessert at all.

Service at Kelly English was spectacular, even though I attribute much of it to being a part of the media. And for the most part, the food was good. The starters certainly blew me away!

But due to the steak snafu, I don’t think I can recommend Kelly English. A steakhouse that can’t cook their steaks to order? That’s  a huge fail in my book. Sad smile

Sorry, Kelly English. I really wanted to love you. But some things are just unforgivable.

See you next week with another review!

So my last post about KFC was sort of lame, right? I know, I know…but I’m making up for previous transgressions by presenting you with my experience at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse. Oh, it was EPIC.

My mom treated my sister and I to a dinner at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse the night before mother’s day (what’s wrong with this picture? Shouldn’t it have been the other way around? Oops!). I was super super pumped, especially after looking at their online menu. I studied it and knew what I was going to order weeks in advance! :)

Anyway, Jeff Ruby’s. It’s in the River City Casino in South County, St. Louis.

First of all, the place was absolutely beautiful. The ambiance was amazing: the lighting was dim and romantic, and there were chandeliers everywhere! My heart was racing in anticipation.

I’m not going to waste any more time. Let’s get on to the food! Are you ready for lots of pictures?

We flipped through the wine menu first and settled on a dessert wine: Moscato. Dessert wine with dinner? Sounds like a great way to start the night if you ask me! I’m not a wine connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination, so I’m not going to pretend to be. All I know is that I like sweet bubbly wines, and this one hit the spot!

guess who drank most of the bottle? *hiccup*

On to the food. We’ll start with appetizers. My mom wanted us to try a little bit of everything, so we ordered quite a few appetizers. We started with the HUGE tiger shrimp cocktail:

This picture doesn’t adequately show just how HUGE these shrimp were. They were gigantic! And the flavor was amazing. Definitely a nice start to the meal.

Oh, but we didn’t stop there. Next on the appetizer list? Pan roasted mussels. They were accompanied with a white wine, applewood smoked bacon,  taragon and lemon sauce. MMM. These were divine. The mussels had a nice, light taste. Not too bogged down with spices. Clean…just the way I like it.

I ate a few mussels before I took this picture! Oops!

Next I wanted to try an oyster on the half shell. I’ve never tried raw oysters before. What the heck…might as well try it now!

I topped it with some cocktail sauce and horseradish before I slurped it down. Not bad! I don’t know if I’d do this again, though. Not a huge fan of the texture of oysters, even though the flavor was crisp, clean, and amazing.

We also had bread. I believe it was Jewish Rye. Not too shabby. The butter was the star of the show for me! There was regular butter (BORING!), and then there was mushroom and truffle butter. Now THAT’S what I’m talking about! It was yummy. I could eat that butter with a spoon. YUM.

look at that butter! Delish. Plain butter on the right, HEAVENLY mushroom and truffle butter on the left.

We noticed that they had sushi on the menu, and as a self-proclaimed sushi snob, I knew we had to try it. We went with the Dragon roll. I don’t remember exactly what was on it, but there was eel involved. And cucumber. And I think there was some crab in there somewhere. It was not bad at all! Quite delicious, actually. It gets the sushi stamp of approval from me!

Can you believe we still had room for our entrée after all of those appetizers? Well, we did. I went with the steak and lobster. 11 ounces of cold water lobster tail paired with 9 ounces of dry aged filet mignon? YES PLEASE! I had my steak topped with crab meat and béarnaise sauce, just because I was feeling a little fancy. :)

you can't have lobster without butter sauce!

The food was AMAZING. The pictures just don’t do it justice. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare, and it was amazingly tender. It melted in my mouth. The crab and bearnaise sauce were decadent and rich. The lobster was tender and so so SO juicy! I promise you that I will have dreams about this meal. It was cooked to perfection.

Of course I can’t hog the spotlight; my mom and sister’s entrees were fabulous as well:

Mom ordered the U.S.D.A. Prime Dry Aged New York Strip...14 ounces of meaty perfection!

my sister also ordered the steak and lobster. She topped her steak with peppercorn shrimp scampi.

Everything at Jeff Ruby’s is a la carte, so of course we had to order some sides to go with our meal.

We had baked macaroni and cheese:

baked macaroni and cheese

Potatoes Anna:

potatoes anna

Creamed Spinach:

creamed spinach

And grilled bacon (because who DOESN’T love bacon?!?!) :

grilled bacon!

Whew! So how was everything? The baked macaroni and cheese was tasty, although I admit that it looked better than it tasted. The Potatoes Anna were delicious! Think fried potatoes, minus all of the grease that weighs you down. They were delicious, and seasoned with the perfect amount of salt and spices.

The creamed spinach was, well…creamed spinach. Didn’t knock my socks off, but it was decent.

My favorite side by far was the BACON!! Who would have thought, right? It was delicious applewood smoked bacon, and it was thick, thick, THICK! Oh, it was perfection. Chewy, flavorful, salty, spicy…it had it all.

So after stuffing my face with appetizers, entrees, and sides, how in the world did I find room for dessert? Well, my friends…Stephanie ALWAYS makes room for dessert.

I went with the flourless chocolate torte. It was topped with sliced almonds and accompanied with house-made cherry sorbet.

Twas muy delicioso! It was rich and decadent (I’ve been using that phrase a lot throughout this review, haven’t I?) The raspberry sauce that was smeared on the plate was sweet and tart at the same time. The cherry sorbet was SO good, and went perfectly with this cake. It was just delightful. Perfect way to end the meal!

Or did I really end the meal there? Can I tell you a secret? I also had a piece of gooey butter cake and some amaretto ice cream to go with it. I’m so sad I didn’t take a picture, because this was the BEST gooey butter cake I’ve had IN. MY. LIFE. It was freaking fantastic!

So thus ends the journey of a thousand plates. Needless to say, we had plenty of leftovers. I’m munching on a piece of bacon right now. Nomnomnom. So good.

Service was very good. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. No complaints there!

Ready for some scores?

Food: 5 stars (out of five)

Ambiance: 5 stars

Service: 5 stars

Value: 4 stars

Jeff Ruby’s almost received a perfect score from me. However, one could have easily purchased an iPhone for what our meal cost us. However, good food is worth the money, so I’m giving it 4 stars for value anyway!

I can only hope to be so lucky to return to Jeff Ruby’s again someday. THANKS TO MY MOM FOR TREATING ME TO AN AMAZING MEAL!!

I will have sweet dreams tonight. And then I’ll be hitting the gym HARD tomorrow. Oy vey.
