Alternate titles for this blog entry:

- Why Food Blogging Rocks!

- Yes, Food Bloggers are Crazy

- Why yes, I am going to take a picture of those french fries!

I think the original title works just fine. Smile

I went to Wendy’s on Friday, December 10th. The Foodbuzz tastemakers program gave me a $10 gift card to Wendy’s to try their new sea salt french fries. Free food? Count me in!

It was nice to see Wendy’s advertising their new fries. Signs were everywhere!

Reason #273 why food blogging is not for the faint of heart: People will stare at you as you snap pictures of the interior of Wendy’s. I tried to be as inconspicuous as possible, but it’s pretty hard to do when you’re lugging a camera bag, a huge DSLR, and you’re taking pictures inside of a Wendy’s. Hey, I can swallow my pride in the name of food blogging! Of course, curious bystanders had questions and comments. Some of my favorites:

“Are you really taking pictures of your french fries?” Why yes…yes I am. Smile

“Are you a health inspector?” No, but how sweet of a job would that be?!?

“Is this a project for your school newspaper?” Woohoo! I’m 25 and I still pass for a student? I’ll take it!

Anyway, on to the food. I was really excited about Wendy’s new fries, mostly because I wasn’t a huge fan of their old ones. Bring on the change!

IMG_59662

These babies were good. They were perfectly salty (which I loved!) and super crispy and hot. They were good all by themselves, but I decided to be a bit daring and dip them in ketchup.

IMG_59732

Yumtastic. BBQ sauce would have taken this to a whole new level.

I would definitely order these fries again. Wendy’s, you’ve redeemed yourself in my book. You know what would have been amazing? These fries dipped in one of their Frostys. Mmmm!! Does anyone else do that?

French fries + Vanilla Frosty == food nirvana.  Why didn’t I think to order a frosty? I guess that means I’ll have to return soon!

So I’m sure you’re dying to try these fries for yourself (aren’t you?). You’re in luck – Foodbuzz gave me an additional $10 Wendy’s giftcard to give away to one of my readers. Entering the contest is super easy, and I’m giving you two chances to win. Each option counts as a separate entry, so doing both will increase your chances of winning!

1. Become a fan of Off The Eaten Path STL on Facebook, and leave me a comment telling me you’ve done so. If you’re already a fan, leave a comment telling me so.

2. Follow me on Twitter and leave a comment telling me you’ve done so. http://twitter.com/OffEatenPathSTL

The contest closes on Friday, December 17th at 8 p.m. Central Standard Time. Good luck!

FTC disclosure: As part of the Foodbuzz Tastemaker Program, I received 2 gift cards to use at Wendy’s.

STL Wine Festival 2010, Part II!

by Stephanie on September 28, 2010

in Foodbuzz

There was so much going on at the St. Louis Wine Festival that I couldn’t cram it all into one post! Well…I could have, but you don’t want to see me ramble on and on…trust me. :)

Quick recap: I was invited to attend the St. Louis Wine Festival as a Foodie Correspondent. Thanks again, Foodbuzz!

IMG_2577Decisions, decisions…which wine to drink?

I was hit with wine overload after hitting up the first few booths! Carina (Andy’s mom!) and I decided it was time for some food! Roxane had a booth, and their menu looked pretty appetizing:

IMG_2700  IMG_2696

The crab cake minis sounded delish! Decision = made.

IMG_2709They were just as yummy as they looked. Festivals are a great way to try bites from local places you’ve never visited before, but you usually can’t go in expecting top-of-the-line food. Hey, why don’t you try preparing food in 80 degree heat and let me know how that turns out? ;)

These crab cakes, however, were phenomenal! I can’t wait to visit Roxane and give them an official review!

After inhaling our crab cake sliders, we were ready for more action! As we walked along, we saw this sign:

IMG_2598Stella Artois? Free beer seminar? Count me in!

We arrived a little before 1pm so we could get good seats. I snapped a few pictures in the meanwhile!

IMG_2600 IMG_2601

Our presenter was Bart Vandaele, executive chef and owner of Belga Cafe in Washington, DC. He’s kind of a big deal – he first garnered international notice as executive chef for the European Union’s head diplomat to the United States, and he’s prepared meals for Hillary Clinton and former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan! Wowza.

IMG_2608 IMG_2628 IMG_2626

Did I mention that he’s also pretty darn attractive? Hello!

Me and Carina snagged front row seats so we could admire his beauty…I mean, listen to the presentation.

I actually learned quite a bit about the proper way to pour a beer! It’s actually a 9 step process!

We were provided with some, ahem, “learning tools”, to try the process on our own.

IMG_2616 IMG_2621

Each beer gets it’s own special glass. This is to ensure the best taste for each particular beer. This is serious business!

I tried the Stella Artois:

IMG_2635The Hoegaarden (that’s pronounced “HU-garden”)

IMG_2641And the Leffe.

IMG_2647

All of the beers were delicious, but the Leffe was my favorite. Look at that beautiful amber color!

After the presentation, I came back for another generous pour!

IMG_2716

Delish!

Before the presentation, I was able to get a one-on-one interview with Brad Vandaele himself! Thanks to Charesse from CharesseINK for setting this up! I was super nervous!

IMG_2554Can you tell?

We chatted a bit about his career, life in Belgium, and beers in general. He explained to me how beers can go with anything – appetizers, entrees, even dessert! He told me about a beer float that he made with Hoegaarden beer, vanilla ice cream, and honey! MMM. He was so friendly and was happy to ham it up for the camera.

IMG_2556

I wished I had more time to talk to him! He was so interesting. I also wish I wasn’t so nervous! Ahh!

After all of that beer, wine, and food, I was pooped! We walked around a bit more, chatted with a bunch of awesome people (wear a ‘Media’ badge, and suddenly everyone wants to talk with you! Love it!), and hurried toward the main stage when we heard music. Guess who was performing?

IMG_2728Kim Massie! Doesn’t she just look fierce? She was nice enough to pose for me before she started her set.

She. Was. Amazing! It was my first time seeing her perform live, and her voice is clear, strong, and beautiful. It was the perfect way to end the festival.

All in all, it was a great day. I had so much fun! I hope you all enjoyed reading this review as much as I enjoyed writing it. Until next time! :)

P.S. Thanks again, Foodbuzz!

STL Wine Festival 2010, Part I!

by Stephanie on September 27, 2010

in Foodbuzz

I started this blog back in March, upon my coworker’s suggestion. I love food, and I love to write, so why not combine the two? Little did I know that soon after, I’d be accepted into the Foodbuzz Featured Publishers program, and not long after that, I’d be invited to the St. Louis Wine Festival as a Foodie Correspondent!

IMG_2723IMG_2730

Yes, I felt super official. :)

Andy’s mom happens to love wine, so when I was told I could bring a guest, she was my first choice!

IMG_2569The festival was held in beautiful Forest Park in St. Louis, Missouri.

IMG_2541  IMG_2720IMG_2542

There were so many wineries there! We’ll start from the beginning, but before I get started, let me preface this by saying I know nothing about wines! I know that I like sweet fruity wines, but that’s it. I don’t know a pinot noir from a chardonnay! So try not to judge me too much! :)

We started at Ironstone vineyards. Everyone was so friendly and willing to pose in pictures for me! Could it be because of the ‘Media’ nametag? I don’t know, but I loved it!

IMG_2543

I requested a sweet wine, and they delivered! I tried two different wines: Obsession Symphony (a sweet, floral wine) and Ironstone Expression (a sweet rose wine). Both were delicious!

IMG_2547                                                                  IMG_2548

We headed to the Montelle Winery booth next, where I had a deliciously sweet Himmelswein.

IMG_2579                                              IMG_2568

My plan was to stick with sweet wines for the duration of the festival, but with a little urging from Andy’s mom, I decided to branch out. I tried an Argentinean red wine from TGIC Importers.

IMG_2684

Honestly? I wasn’t a huge fan. Way too dry for me.

Back to sweet wines!

Les Bourgeois Vineyards was next. They had a ton of wines to sample (all of the booths did, actually!), but I went with their sweetest ‘Riverboat Red’.

IMG_2686 IMG_2690 IMG_2688

And sweet it was! I think this was one of my favorite wines of the day.

My favorite wine booth at the festival was Quintessential Wines! They had unique wines and a guy who really knew his wines. I loved listening to him talk about wine!

IMG_2591 IMG_2592 IMG_2594

Of course, they also had quite a selection to choose from. Decisions, decisions!

IMG_2588 IMG_2590

I ended up trying the Prosecco. It was bubbly and made me feel all fancy. :)

IMG_2596

Some other wine-related highlights:

IMG_2664

Trying Ten Buck wine from Mount Pleasant Winery,

IMG_2582 IMG_2583 IMG_2584

Eating yummy chocolate from Cafe Cioccolato,

IMG_2651 IMG_2659 IMG_2658

And looking at cute wine glasses and accessories from the Snobby Little Wine Club! Cute.

Oh, but that’s not all! I also scored an interview with a Belgian Chef, ate some delicious food, attended a beer seminar, and watched a really talented local celebrity perform some great songs! You want details, don’t you? That’s all coming in part two tomorrow, so I’ll see you then!

Here’s a tiny hint:
